THE FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY of ENC CELEBRATES SECOND ANNIVERSARY
With An Original Song, James City Presentation, Two Civil War Film
Premieres, and an Encore Film
The Family History Society of Eastern North Carolina will celebrate
its second anniversary with a special program in partnership with the
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society of Craven Community College
commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of New Bern at 1pm
on March 31, 2012 in Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina
History Center located at 529 South Front Street, New Bern.
Mrs. Helen Sims Smaw will debut her piano composition “Song of New
Bern” in honor of the second anniversary of the Society and in memory
of those whose lives where affected by the Battle of New Bern. Mrs.
Smaw, a resident of New Bern, is an internationally recognized
composer and lyricist.
Mr. Ben A. Watford, president of the James City Historical Society and
a local historian, will discuss the many accomplishments of the James
City Historical Society over the past 20 years including the renovated
slave quarters located in James City. He will also display tools and
items used by slaves during the antebellum era.
Mr. Tony D. Bryant, a New Bernian, graduate of New Bern High School,
decorated USMC Veteran, Phi Theta Kappa alumnus, graduate of Craven
Community College, and a current student at East Carolina University
will present his two original short films about New Bern during the
Civil War. The first is “Baptism by Fire: The Battle for New Berne”
which tells the story of this pivotal March 1862 event in New Bern’s
history. The second is “For Liberty and Union” which explores the
Union Army occupation of New Bern, the effect on the people of the
area, and the creation of the James City community.
Ms. Rebekah Turnage, Treasurer of Phi Theta Kappa, and History
Professor Kate Smaw Amerson, Craven Community College faculty advisor
for PTK, will present the third film which will be an encore showing
of the “Voices of New Bern”, the award-winning Phi Theta Kappa Honor
Society documentary which recognizes some forgotten voices who made
history in New Bern.
Delicious desserts will be served in Mattocks Hall after the film
premieres. The program is free and open to the public and everyone is
