Looking for information on Echols E Whitaker b 12 Nov 1897 Cleveland or Rutherford Counties NC. Echols first shown up in the 1910 census for Cleveland County, NC in the home of William D Peeler and Amanda "Mandy" Jane Padgette Peeler as an adopted Son age 13 years old and born in NC. William and Amanda had a daughter, Georgis, b 1896. They must have had a problem not being able to have another child so they adopted Echols. Echols was still in the HH of William and Amanda in the 1920 census for Boiling Springs, Cleveland County, NC. William was previously married and had a family with his first wife, Anne Nancy Price. Echols had to file a draft card for WW1 where he confirmed the above dob and also gave his physical discription as short, slender, grey eyes, and dark hair. In the 1930 census William had died in 1926 and Mandy was head of the HH. Echols was missing from that census. The last reference I found was a S/S death notation as he died Aug 1975 28160 Spindale, Rutherford County, NC so he must have lived his entire life in the Rutherford or Cleveland County, NC. I have been unable to locate his parents but in the WW1 Draft card he gave the next to be notified as F.C. Whitaker, indicating to me that may be his father or mother. In the 1920 census living next to William and Amanda with Echols as an adopted son was a Hoyt Whitaker living in the HH of James Grant as 13 years of age. There may be a connection to Echols. Any information would be appreciated. Earl Peeler earl747@bellsouth.net Notify Administrator about this message?
