Martin Alexander Smith of Chatham Co., N.C.
(A Comprehensive Search of Smiths in Virginia and North Carolina)by Gary Ray Smith, August 20, 2008

Capt. Francis Smith was born 1715; son of William Smith born about 1680; son of Maj. Lawrence Smith, born 1629. He had a son named John Smith, born 1747. John Smith, married Sarah and had a son named Joseph M. Smith. Joseph M., shown as "Smith, Jos. M.," had a will, January 11, 1823, Lunenburg Co., Virginia. He was born in the 1760 period within a timeframe of General Joseph Martin's birth, third child of Joseph Martin born Sept. 18, 1740, Lousia Co., Virginia. Many Smiths followed Martins in naming patterns throughout a westward expansion of lower Virginia and North Carolina counties. The given names of Joseph, Thomas, James and William can be found with Maj. Lawrence Smith, born 1629, Lancashire, England, died 1700, Gloucester Co., Virginia. Major Lawrence Smith is the son of Christopher Smythe, I, born 1591; son of Thomas Smythe, born 1558; son of Thomas "Customer" Smythe, born about 1530; son of John Smythe, born about 1495; son of Richard Smythe, born about 1460; son of William Smyth born about 1430.

Of interest to any Smith descendant is when and where the spelling of Smith with a "y" and "e" took place. Some Smythes of Virginia seem to have continued this spelling, however, speaking of Smiths traveling to Rockingham Rowan, Montgomery, Moore and Chatham Counties, N.C. the name seems to have altered about 1762. On a List of Taxables for Pitt Co., N.C., 1762, are found Brunswick "Smyths" by the names of William Smythe, William Smythe, Jr., Christopher Smythe, Joseph Smythe, Jonathan Smythe and Samuel Smythe. On a List of Taxables for Pitt Co., N.C., 1763, it appears each has become a regular "Smith." Whatever the reason for a spelling change such practice continued to the present.

A short break here in the search for Chatham Co., N.C. Smiths is called for to investiagte an article on lineal naming conventions. I'm not a genealogist with special methods but herein attempt to follow naming patterns as they seemed to be at play. The article recommends following a standard pattern for English families of Western culture when determining who was the Father, Grandfather and so on. I don't think it was practice for these Smiths to name a son after the Mother's family but instead to place a madien name into a middle name position. Fathers often split their two given names between two sons and occasionally gave the same name twice. Anyone trying to follow the below recipe will be engulfed by frustration because the naming children among these Smiths was paternalistic even among females but here it is:

The first son was named after the father's father; The second son was named after the mother's father; The third son was named after the father; The fourth son was named after the father's eldest brother; The first daughter after the mother's mother; The second daughter after the father's mother; The third daughter after the mother; The fourth daughter after the mother's eldest sister.

Lunenburg Co. was once part of Brunswick Co., Va. and a springboard for Smith migrationat that time. Brunswick Co. was formed from Prince George Co. in 1720. Smith names can be found among the Brunswick Co., Va., Index to Wills and Administrations, 1750-1800, Library of Virginia while other Smiths having left decades earlier returned to be found in the Brunswick Co., Va., Meherrin District of the 1810 Federal Census Index--Abraham, 0761; Pleasant, 0761; Richd S., 0761; Stephen, 0762; and Lewis, 0763. Abraham Smith is found in the 1790 Chatham Co., N.C. census but not later; Pleasant Smith, age (16-26) and Lewis (Levi) Smith, age (45+) are found in the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census but not 1810.

Russell Co. was near the end of a string of counties on the southside of Virginia that included Lunenburg, Halifax, Bedford, Pittsylvania and counties westward. In the history of Russell Co., located on the extreme west of the state, there can be found signers of its 1785 petition of formation by Martin and Smith names of Alexander Martin (a future governor of N.C.), Edward Smith, Elijah Smith, James Smith, John Smith and William Smith.

Whichever way Smiths traveled from coastal Va. westward or back into N.C. their roots were established from Pitt to Grandville, to Rowan, Rockingham and Montgomery then onto Moore and Chatham counties. Smiths moved to Tennessee and Georgia by way of Revolutionary War land grants but for those that stayed, not all Smiths are found in any one 1790 county census. In Montgomery Co., N.C. are found important names such as: Alexander, John, Nathan, Isham, James, Richard, Asa, William, Joseph and Sherwood. To demonstrate the Brunswick, Va. connection Sherwood Smith, born 1761, in Brunswick Co., is the son of James Smith, born about 1735, found in the 1790 Montgomery Co., Salisbury District, N.C. census.

Martin Alexander Smith is found with his Father, Thomas Smith, in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census, Lower Regiment, Reel No. 432-624, Page No. 469a. By 1850 most Smiths that relocated from Rockingham, Rowan and Montogmery counties to the Bear Creek district of Chatham and upper Moore counties are moved. The stock of our North Carolina Smith name are in Montogomery and Chatham County, N.C. census records from 1790 to 1860. Immediately after the Northern War of Aggression, Martin Alexander Smith moves to Floyd Co., Ga. where he shows up in the 1880 census. His last move takes him to Oglethorpe Co., Ga. where the Smith family is recorded in the 1900 and 1910 census records.

Martin Alexander Smith's complete name was discovered through an 82-year-old Grandson by the name of name of Joe Brown Martin, son of Michael Pope Martin and Teilyar Smith. Teilyar Smith-Martin was a daughter of Martin Alexander Smith and Sara E. Womack. Joe Brown Martin emphasised how he was named for Georgia's Confederate war Governor Joe Brown and told how "M.A." was in a Confederate band during the war. Without his memory it could have taken years to discover Martin Alexander Smith's enlistment and home county of Chatham, North Carolina.

Joe Brown Martin was extensively interviewed in a collection of three cassette tapes in 1989 at his Locust Grove, Ga. home and on a visit to Winterville, Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. Joe Brown Martin, Robert Martin Smith and Gary Ray Smith visited relatives at home and the gravesite of Martin Alexander Smith at Holly-Carter Cemetery. The cemetery at that time was overgrown with heavy timber and had gravestones scattered among the brush, however, Joe pointed to where Martin Alexander Smith was laid to rest in 1917.

In the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census Martin Smith, born 1776, was 24 years of age and another Martin Smith, a "Jr.," 6 years old. If both Martins were of the same family, they should be found of appropriate ages in the census but it doesn't look that way. At no time does Martin Smith, born 1776, ever use "Sr." with Martin, Jr., present in any census from 1800 to 1850. Martin Smith and Martin Smith, Jr., appear to be of different but related Smith families; possibly one in the household of James, 176 while the other belongs with Wily, Willis, or William, dwelling 189, shown in the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census. One of these brothers may have shared the Martin name and passed it on to Martin, Jr. Martin Smith, Jr., remarried in 1857, showed a middle initial and possible clue to his family ties--Smith, Martin J. & Wilkie, Elizabeth M., 28 Dec. 1857, David Pattishall, bnd., W. Hanks, wit. Married 31 Dec. 1857 by J. Patterson, J.P. Was the "J." for James, John or Joshua?

In the 1830 Chatham Co. census index Martin Smith, Jr., is in dwelling 400 while Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of Martin Smith, born 1776; is in 401. The first time seeing these two near each other may cause one to assume they're brothers but it doesn't rule out their simply being cousins of near the same ages living close to each other. The Smith given names of Isham, Peter, Malcom and Jordon are not included among those of the Smith lineage in question but included in the below census extract to show dwellings appearing near an elderly Martin Smith, 189.

Willie, Willy and probably Willis are nicknames for William and in dwelling 189, below, there seem to be three or more William Smiths. There are individuals in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census within age range and close proximity of Martin Smith, born 1776, that may be brothers or cousins among these Williams. One is Lemuel Smith, born 1798, who named his frist son Berry Smith and a third son Alfred Smith, born 1840 while the other is John T. Smith, born 1796, who named his son Berry W. Smith, born 1827. Both are under 10 years of age by 1800 but still a clue that one of the Williams is a "Berry" and possibly one William B., 190, shown with Martin Smith, 187 (both "45+") in the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census. George Smith, born 1792, named his first born "Alfred W." telling of a William in dwelling 189 as "Alfred," Alfred William or William Alfred Smith.

There is an Isham, 189 that matches in age Isham Smith, born 1756; son of William Isham Smith, born about 1730. Since William B. Smith is listed with Martin Smith in 189 then note a second individual under William, 189, 45+ years of age who may be Isham's Father. William Isham Smith, born about 1730, also has a son named Mark Smith, born unknown. It is the lack of complete information on Mark Smith that might have firmed the prospect of relation, however, having the Isham and Mark Smith names is an interesting piece of information on dwelling 189.

In the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census is Martin Smith, Jr., born 1794 (dwelling 791), married Nancy Smith, born 1818; children: Betheny Smith, born 1840; Elizabeth Smith, born 1842 and Presley Smith, born 1844. There is a James Smith (RootsWeb: ID I2447), born 1706 in Virginia, married Elizabeth Presley, born 1708, from where the Presley name may have come. James' Father was said to have been born in Wales. James and Elizabeth had these children: Peter Smith, born about 1734; Presley Smith, born about 1736; William Bailey Smith, born 1738 and Nancy Ann Smith, born 1749. Presely Smith (RootsWeb ID: I2451), married Nancy Kinchelow, born about 1749 and had children: Elizabeth Smith, born 1773; Dorcas Smith, born about 1775; Nancy Smith, born about 1775; Jane Smith, born about 1781; Daniel James Smith, born about 1783; John Smith, born about 1785; Peter W. Smith, born about 1787; William Smith, born about 1789; Presley C. Smith, born about 1791; Elias W. Smith, born about 1793 and Mary Smith, born about 1795. It is said that Presley Smith, born 1736, died in Washington Co., Ky. in 1819 but it is possible some of these familar names wound up in Chatham Co., North Carolina. There are no family members by the name of Presley Smith in memory or easily found in any descending lines from Martin Smith, born 1776.

There may even be doubts about some of Presley Smith's information being on target due to an order of names in Elizabeth Smith, born 1773, and Mary Smith, born 1795. As shall be read more in the next paragraphs, Mary, precedes Elizabeth in a predictable pattern and it may well be assumed that some Elizabeths of generations had Mary as a first name. This seemingly small difference marks a big departure from naming practice of the Smiths of Chatham Co., N.C. The greater good of this discrepancy is that with small exception the overall accuracy of information about these Smith generations seems to be acceptable.

The given names of Francis, Frank and Franklin have been used by Smiths of the past and as late as Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900, son of Martin Alexander Smith. Such a common name as Smith demands a unique given name be followed back generations in hope of finding family connections. Thomas Smith, born 1807, named his two of his sons Francis M. Smith and Asa F. [Francis, Frank or Franklin?] Smith. When combined with Martin Alexander Smith's pattern of naming Nathan F. Smith and then Frank Smith; Charlie Martin Smith in the next generation named Franklin Smith. The doubling of given names within a family could be the hint of an important past family member and the Francis connection may mark there was was purpose in doing so.

[WILLIAM] MARTIN SMITH, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; female children: Martha Smith and Nancy Smith. Also--Thomas Smith, born 1807 below; William Smith, born 1816. Not all of the sons and daughters of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776, seem to be known or recognised the in Chatham Co., N.C. censuses. (Martin's wife: 1 unkn.and 2 Frances Mann-Smith)

THOMAS SMITH, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; children: Martin Alexander Smith; William A. Smith; Joseph J. Smith; Thomas D. Smith; Francis M. Smith; Asa F. Smith; Esperan Smith; Richard G. Smith and females: Dicy Ann Smith, Martha Smith and Candis Smith. (Thomas' wife: Hannah Hartsal)

MARTIN ALEXANDER SMITH, born 1838 son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; children: Nathan (1st) F. Smith; William Smith, Horace Smith; Thomas Jackson Smith, Frank Smith; Alexander Smith; Charlie Martin Smith; Nathan (2nd) Smith and females: Rosa Smith, Mary Smith; Otelia Smith; Fannie Smith; Julia Smith; Mollie [Nancy?] Smith and Betsie Smith. Mollie is a nickname for Martha or Mary but there already was a Mary in this family. Betsie is a nickname for Elizabeth. (Martin's wife: married 1 Sarah Drake, 2 Sarah E. Womack, married 3 Sousie Cox)

CHARLIE MARTIN SMITH, born 1900; son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; children: William "Billy" Alfred Smith; Robert Martin Smith; Charlie Ray Smith; Samuel O'Ree Smith and Franklin Eugene Smith. Females: none. (Charlie's wife: Ida D. Crowley)

By itself "Francis" might not be enough pointing back to a certain Smith family but more names have surfaced through female lines. [William] Martin Smith, born 1776, named Martha Smith and Nancy Smith (see Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74, married Martha Nancy Posey) in an order that other Smith families repeated likewise for Mary Elizabeth. From the RootsWeb:

(Thomas' wife: Elizabeth Witt.)

DRURY SMITH (same four recurring female names), born 1745; son of Thomas Smith, Capt., born 1725; son of Francis Smith, Capt, born 1715; son of William Smith, born about 1680; son of Lawrence Smith, Maj., born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591. Drury named four daughters: Mary Ann Smith; Elizabeth Smith, born 1785; Martha Smith, born 1779 and Nancy Smith, born 1801. Drury Smith, by example of his duaghter's names is family of Zachariah Smith(2), born 1734, indicating brothers. Also--William B. GEORGE SMITH, (same four recurring female names), born 1746; son of Robert Smith, born 1733; son of Lawrence Smith, Col., born 1657; son of Lawrence Smith, Maj., born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; named four of six daughters: Mary Smith, born 1777; Elizabeth Smith, born 1779; Martha Smith, born 1785 and Nancy Smith, born 1795. It's possible that if George Smith, born 1746; son of Robert Smith, born 1733, names four children after Zachariah(2)'s family ties that a Thomas Smith, born after 1725 might be George's half-brother--Thomas. (George's wife: Elizabeth Earls)

ABNER SMITH, born 1781; son of George Smith, born 1746; son of Robert Smith, born 1733; son of Lawrence Smith, Col., born 1657; son of Lawrence Smith, Maj., born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; children: Bennett Smith, d. 1844; Susannah Smith; Rebecca Smith, Rhoda Smith, born 1799; Mary Smith, born 1802; Elizabeth Smith, born unknown and Jehiel Smith, born 1806. MARTIN SMITH, appears in the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. Census as (45+), possible elderly, no wife or children recorded in the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census. Needs further exploration.

Also--Thomas Smith, born 1807 below; William Smith, born 1816. (Martin's wife: 1 unkn. and 2 Frances Mann-Smith)

ALSTON SMITH, born 1807; children: William A. Smith, born 1850, in household Elizabeth Smith, born 1780. (Alston's wife: Martha Smith)

MARTIN [J.] SMITH, JR., born 1794; female children: Betheny Smith, born 1818 and Elizabeth Smith, born 1842. (Martin's wife: 1 Nancy Smith and 2 Elizabeth M. Wilkie)

MARTIN ALEXANDER SMITH, born 1838; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; female children: Rosa Smith, Mary Smith; Otelia Smith; Fannie Smith; Julia Smith; Mollie Smith and Betsie Smith. Mollie is a nickname for Martha or Mary but there already was a Mary in this family. Betsie is a nickname for Elizabeth. It is very noticable how Martin Alexander Smith; son of Thomas Smith, born about 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776, continues trend with Mary, Mollie (Martha) and Betsie (Elizabeth). Also--William Alfred Smith, Robert Martin Smith, Charlie Ray Smith, Samuel O'Ree Smith and Franklin Eugene Smith.

CHARLIE MARTIN SMITH, born 1900; son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; William Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; female children: none.

George, Zachariah(2), Drury and James each have daughters of these four names: Mary, Elizabeth, Martha and Nancy but while George and Drury have wives named Elizabeth, Zachariah(2)'s wife Frances Prestwood and Jame's wife, Frances, seem to have little in common. An interesting chronology of the Mary and Elizabeth name connection above is that Mary always preceded Elizabeth of four male lines. There is a woman singled out here and she may be Lt. Christopher Smith, II's wife Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England or a Mary and Elizabeth of an earlier time is intended since two of the four, Zachariah(2) and James "Long John" Smith, are known to have Lt. Christopher Smith, II, as an ancestor.

The earliest Mary and Elizabeth begins with Thomas "Customer" Smythe, born 1522, Ostenhanger, Kent Co., England, who is the Father of Thomas Smythe, born 1558; Father of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; Father of Christopher Smythe, II, Lt., born 1630; Father of Ambrose Joshua Smith, born
1703. Of the seven females Thomas "Customer" had, he named one Mary and another Elizabeth Smythe. It is presumed Mary Smythe is named for Thomas' wife's (Alice Judde, born unknown) Father, Sir [Lord Mayor] Andrew Judde's wife Mary Mervyn.

Thomas "Customer" Smythe, born about 1530; son of John Smythe, born 1495, has a sister by the name of Elizabeth Smythe, born about 1524, Saffron, England. Thomas "Customer" Smythe, born 1530, had a son Richard Smythe who married Elizabeth Scott. Richard and Elizabeth's female children: Margaret Smythe, Mary Smythe and Elizabeth Smythe (no birth years known). From them,

Smythe/Smith descendants named Mary and Elizabeth appeared in regular fashion. William Smith, born 1688, Surry Co. Va., married Ann Isham, 1716, and from that marriage came Virginia descentants with the middle name "Ann" such as: Nancy Ann Smith, born about 1766; Elizabeth Ann Smith, born about 1770; Mary Ann Smith, born 1793; Martha Ann Smith, born 1816 and Ann Eliza Smith, born 1824.

Just as with the Fairbanks family, Poseys had something to do with a shared naming pattern of Smiths even before arriving in Chatham Co., N.C. An association of the Smith and Posey names can be found in a Brunswick Co., Va., Deed Book 3 (1744-1749)--Indenture made 17 May 1745 between William Smith of Brunswick County, planter, and Batt Peterson of same, £25, South side Merring, 150a. Signed William Smith (bhm). Witnesses: Burrell Brown, Belean Posey, Sarah Denton (bhm). Court June 6, 1745, Indenture and Memorandum acknowledged by William Smith, Planter. Deed Book 3, Page 26. Next, are found the children of: Francis Posey (RootsWeb ID: P2340456472); born 1730, Charles, Maryland; died 1787, Edgefield, S.C.; marriage 1 Mildred Farr, born 1735, Cecil, Maryland. Children: Mary Elizabeth Posey, born 1770, Chatham, N.C. and Martha Nancy Posey, born 1769. Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735, Louisa Co., Va. shows a son Harmon Smith, born 1768; married Mary Elizabeth Posey, born about 1770. Another son is Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74; married Martha Nancy Posey, born 1769. We should next be looking for an original "Martha Nancy Smith" or individuals but at present such is a more difficult task that awaits a future effort.

There are Smith naming ties with Capt. Francis Smith, born 1715; son of William Smith born about 1680; son of Col. Lawrence Smith, born 1657; son of Maj. Lawrence Smith, born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591. Capt. Francis Smith had a son named Thomas Ballard Smith, married Ann Meriwether, born 1721, shown with one female daughter named Rosanna Smith. The next "Rosanna" is a daughter of Lemuel Smith (age 52) in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census in the form "Roxanna" but seems to be a typist/transcriber error. "Laxarus Smith" for "Lasarus Smith" appears in the 1810 Moore Co., N.C. census. Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; next named a daughter "Rosa," born 1889.

Lawrence Smith, Col., born 1657, that named a daughter Lucy Smith. His son Robert Smith, born about 1733, brother of Capt. Francis Smith, was an uncle of William "Billy" Smith, born 1755 and John Smith, born 1747. As a reminder, John was the Father of Joseph M. Smith. Robert Smith named a daughter Lucy Smith that made it of generations. Lemuel Smith (age 52) of the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census had a daughter named Rosanna and another Lucy Smith. In the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census Lemuel Smith can be found in dwelling 185 and [William] Martin Smith, 189. In the 1820 census Chatham Co., N.C. census [William] Martin Smith is in dwelling 187 and Lemuel Smith, 216.

Another child of Thomas', son of Capt. Fancis Smith, born 1715, is William Smith who married Sara Pryor. A Thomas Smith will of 1850, Wayne Co., N.C., names three sisters "Winaford, Pryer and Clarky." A "Pryer" descendant is shown as "Emprior" in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census, page 493a, dwelling 816 and nearby is Martin Smith, Jr., dwelling 791. Needham Smith, witness of Thomas Smith's (relation not determined) 1850 will, appears in the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census, age (16-26), dwelling 191; Jordan Smith (mentioned in the will), age (26-45), 190 and Martin Smith, age (45+), 189, with William Smith and another male--two at age (45+), 189.

Robert Smith, born 1733; son of Col. Lawrence Smith, born 1657; son of Maj. Lawrence Smith, born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son named George Smith, born 1746. George Smith's sons are Abner Smith, born 1781 and Absalom Smith, born 1787. In the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census Martin Smith, dwelling 189, age (45+) can be found nearby with Needham, age (16-26), 191 and Absolom, age (26-45), also in 191. In the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census Martin Smith, age (26-45) is found in dwelling 187, Martin Smith, Jr., age (18-25), 195 and nearby Absolom Smith's brother, Abner, age (26-45), in dwelling 215.

In dwelling 215 of the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census there is a Henry Smith, age (16-26). In the 1850 will of Thomas Smith, Wayne Co., N.C., James Henry Smith is explained as the son of his brother "Mathew" Smith and Burwell is also said to be his brother. Jordan (26-45) is in dwelling 190 with Peter and Malcom of the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census, mentioned in the will without reference to who Jordan is but possibly a brother. The Thomas Smith brothers have sisters named Winaford, Clarky and Pryer. One of the trio names shows up through descendants of the 1850 Moore Co., N.C. census in the form of "Winniford." The name likely comes from Winifred "Winnie" Smith, born 1769, Brunswick Co., Va., a sister of Sherwood Smith, born 1761, son of James Smith, born 1735, of the 1790 Montgomery Co. census.

In the search for the ancestors of Martin Alexander Smith, Alexander Smith, age (45+), dwelling 197, of the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census is most likely where Martin Alexander Smith; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; acquired his middle name. It is also possible the Alexander name came through marriage. The Henry Co., Va. Marriages for 1700-1799 shows a Thomas Smith married Betsey Alexander, 13 May 1795, and the name Betsey shows up among later Chatham Co. Smiths although her age does not match so well. John Smith, born 1685; son of John Smith, born 1665; son of John Smith, born 1624; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; married Anne Alexander. The children of John Smith and Anne Alexander were Samuel Smith, born 1719, died 1783 and another John Smith, born unknown. Anne Alexander offers strong possibility for adding the Alexander name into the Smith line at that point in time.

time to revisit Drury Smith's lineage with a focus on his second wife "Nelly": Drury Smith, born after 1745, Loudoun, Va., died 1822, Rockingham Co., Father: Thomas Smith; marriage 2 Eleanor Nellie Grogan, born 1757[?]; married 1797, Stokes Co., N.C. Children: Edwin Smith, born 1799; Nancy Smith, born 1801; John Smith, born 1802; Richard Smith, born 1804. In the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census we find a Nelly, age (45+), 215 with John, age (45+), 215. There are few choices but that John is Nelly's husband or a relative. John at "45+" can't be either two sons from a first marriage with Elizabeth Vaughn because those sons, Johnson Smith, born 1775 and Drury Smith, born 1776 are not old enough. It appears that "John" from the census and "Drury," born about/after 1745 might be one John Drury Smith.

This might go far explaining two William B. Smiths, one William Bellerophan Smith, born 1770; son of Drury Smith, born after 1745 and the other William B. Smith of John "Little River" Smith, born 1721. John "Little River" Smith had a Thomas Smith while Drury, a son named Thomas Martin Smith and Little River's "Polly" could be a nickname for Drury's "Mary" Smith. It may also be that Little River's son, Gabriel D. Smith, might have the “D.” for Drury's son--Drury. That leaves two boys of Drury's--Daniel and Johnson to match with John "Little River" Smith's sons--Jasper, Joseph, James and Jesse and I can imagine the Daniel and Johnson names in combination with any of the four. If similar names by comparison don't work into Drury being John [Drury] "Little River" Smith

then it might show close family lineage. There are no family members by the name of John Smith in memory or easily found in any descending lines from [William] Martin Smith, born 1776.

The trouble with "Drury" for any Smith descendant as seen in the Brunswick Co., Va., Index to Wills and Administrations, Library of Virginia (1750-1800) is there are several Drurys among relatives that share the name without a recorded first or middle name. Brunswick County wills: Edward Smith, 1772; Aaron Smith, 1793; Ambrus Smith 1761&1768; Ambrus Smith, 1762; Burwell Smith, 1784; Christopher Smith, 1767; Cuthbert [“Curthbert”--spelling, see Brunswick Co., Va., Deed Book 3, 1744-1749] Smith, 1781; Drury Smith, 1740; Drury Smith, 1771, 1775; Drury Smith, 1788; Edward Smith, 1792; Henry Smith, 1791; James Smith, 1793; James Smith, 1796; Jesse Smith, 1782; Jesse Smith, 1800; John Smith, 1733; Joseph Smith, 1783; Patrick Smith, 1735; Patrick Smith, 1743; Richard Smith, 1750; Richard Smith, 1753 & 1754; Richard Smith, 1800; Roger Smith, 1735; Roger Smith, 1768; Roger Smith, 1772; William Smith, 1762 and William Smith, 1785. Any of these Brunswick Co. wills may hold promise of connecting Chatham Co. Smiths together but Drury Smith looks to be of special interest. Just as the spelling of "Smythe" changed in 1763 so the name Drury became seldom used in the late 1700s by these Smiths in Chatham and Moore counties.

If not Thomas Smith, Capt., born after 1725 then the next best match for Thomas [Drury?] Smith is Thomas Smith, born 1741; son of Capt. Francis Smith, born 1715; son of William Smith; son of Col. Lawrence Smith, born 1657; son of Maj. Lawrence Smith, born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591. Little is known about this Thomas except one RootsWeb listing shows the middle name of "Lilly;" a tough match with any descendant but one that most likely would not be passed to a next generation either.

Considering [William] Martin Smith, 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census, named his son Thomas Smith, born 1807, and Thomas named a "Thomas D. Smith"--Thomas Smith's son William (1850 Chatham census), age 11, also named a son "Thomas D." George Smith, age 58, also named a son "Thomas D." just as Thomas Smith, born 1807 did and that probably makes George a close relative, even an uncle, of Thomas Smith, born 1807. All "Thomas D."s seem to have an obscurred and little known ancestor but it is may be one Thomas [Drury] Smith, born after 1745.

Details on claim of family relation to Drury Smith, born after 1745, are:

DRURY SMITH (same four recurring female names), born after 1745; son of Thomas Smith, Capt., born after 1725. Drury named four of five daughters: Mary Ann Smith; Elizabeth Smith, born 1785; Martha Smith, born 1779 and Nancy Smith, born 1801. Drury Smith, by example of his duaghter's names is family of Zachariah Smith(2), born 1734, indicating brothers. Also--William B. Smith, born 1770; [Benjamin] Frank Smith, born 1772; Daniel Smith, born 1774; Johnson Smith, born 1775; Drury Smith, born 1776; Thomas Martin Smith, born 1781; Edwin Smith, born 1799; John Smith, born 1802 and Richard Smith, born 1804. (Drury's wife: Elizabeth Vaughn and Eleanor Nellie Grogan)

[WILLIAM] MARTIN SMITH, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; female children: Martha Smith and Nancy Smith. Also--Thomas Smith, born 1807 below; William Smith, born 1816. (Martin's wife: 1 unkn.and 2 Frances Mann-Smith)
Not only did [William] Martin Smith, born 1776, named two children Martha Smith and Nancy Smith just as did Drury Smith, born after 1745; three other names of Drury Smith's family match closely with the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census--William B. Smith, born 1770 (dwelling 190); Daniel Smith, born 1774 (dwelling 193) and [William] Martin Smith, born 1776 (dwelling 189).

It is no surprise there was a Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900, named among Martin Alexander Smith's children. In the 1820 Chatham Co. census Charles Smith can be found with [William] Martin Smith, dwellng 187. A census annotation of Charles Smith (26-45), dwelling 187, reads "Son of Mark" and appears under Mark Smith's name in 185. This very much seems to tell that Mark Smith (45+) is probably an uncle or brother of [William] Martin Smith (26-45) as there's no such note for Martin. There is a version of William Smith, born 1730, Brunswick Co., Va., listing Mark Smith, born unknown and near James Munford Smith, born about 1770, in birth order. Charles next appears in the 1830 Chatham Co. census Index: Martin Smith, 438 and Mark Smith, 439 with Charles Smith in dwelling 442. The only match for Charles Smith (26-45) is through Charles Smith, born 1727 who had a son within age for the 1820 Chatham Co. census--Charles Smith, born 1778. He must have had a first or middle name "Mark" is the best that can be determined. If not Charles Smith, born 1727, then here are the many possible known ancestors he may descend from at the present time:

Thomas Smyth, born 1524, Rivenhall, Essex, England; son of John Smith, died 1544, Smyth Hall, Essex, England; had a son named Charles Smyth, born unknown.
Lawrence Smith, Maj., born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son named Charles Smith, born 1655.
Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son Charles Smith, born 1675.
Christopher Merchant Smith, born 1670; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son Charles Smith, born 1727.
Charles Smith, born 1727; son of Christopher Merchant Smith, born 1670; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son Charles Smith, born 1778.
Cuthbert (Curthbert) Smith, died 1780; son of William Smith, born 1688 (married Ann Isham about 1726); had a son Charles Smith, born unknown.
Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son named Charles H. Smith, born 1740.
John "Little River" Smith, born 1720; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, Capt., born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son named Charles Smith, born after 1760.
Christopher Smith, born 1730; son of Christopher Merchant Smith, born 1670; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son Charles Smith, born 1760.
Isham Smith, born 1726; son of William Smith, born 1688 (married Ann Isham about 1726); had a son named Charles Smith, born 1769; who had a son named Coleman Smith (see the 1790 Chatham Co., N.C. census for what must be "Coley" Smith). Female children: Selah Smith; Sarah Smith; Rebecca Smith; Mary Ann Smith; Elizabeth Smith; Frances Smith; Priscilla Smith and Lucy Smith, born 1772.
Josiah Smith, Sr., born about 1728; son of William Smith, born 1688 (married Ann Isham about 1726); had a son named Charles Smith, born 1752. Female children: Sarah Ann Smith, born 1760; Lucinda Smith, born 1762; Martha Smith, born about 1764; Judith Smith, born 1767; Elizabeth Ann Smith, born 1770 and Susannah Smith, born about 1774.
Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; had a son named Charles Smith, born 1760.

The following are children of Charles Smith who married Dorothea Lewis. The Dorothea Lewis connection gives rise to identifying "Lewis (Levi)" of the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census provided a "Mark" can somehow be pulled out of this family. Charles Smith, born 1727; son of Christopher Merchant Smith, born 1670; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; married Dorothea Davis Lewis, born unknown, died 1820; children: Christopher Smith, born 1763, died 1804; John Smith, born 1775, died 1837; Charles Smith, born 1778, died 1814. The Charles Smith sought after had to be alive for the 1820 and 1830 censuses and this one seems to have expired by 1814. Knowing who Charles Smith may actually rely on finding out more about Mark Smith.

In the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census there can be found [William] Martin Smith (age 74), born 1776, and Frances Smith (age 76), born 1774, in dwelling 408. It might be hoped Mark Smith, as possible brother of Martin, is not going to be far away and in dwelling 325 is Biddy Smith (age 51), born 1799; Candis Smith (age 42), born 1808; Mark Smith (age 11), born 1839; David W. Smith (age 9), born 1841, and Selia Smith (age 7), born 1843. It seems this was a little to late in the life to catch Mark Smith in the 1850 census or it might be that Biddy, age 51, is Mark's sister and Candis Smith, age 42, is the wife of a desceased Charles Smith (Mark's son) and Mark's name does appear in one child, age 11. Isham Smith, born 1726; had a daughter named Selah Smith and a son named Charles Smith, born 1769, so it might be likely that Isham could be Mark Smith's Father. "Biddy" is a nickname for Bridget and there is a marriage record in Halifax Co., Va. for: Smith, William; Lovelass, Bridget, 28 Feb. 1791. Bridget Smith shows up in Russell Co., Va., 1788-1810, Land and Personal Property Tax Lists--Andrew Smith; Bridget Smith; Eli Smith; Elijah Smith; Ericus Smith; Henry Smith; Henry Smith, Sr.; Henry Smith, Jr.; John Smith; Moses Smith; Robert Smith; Robert Smith; William Smith; William Smith (2); James Smith; John Smith and Mann Smith. Possible land ownership back to 1791 seems to reinforce the idea that Biddy was a sister and not wife of Charles Smith. "Candiss," a more recent name among Smiths, is also one used by Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; in near the exact same spelling for a daughter, age 3.

It may be fruitful to have a look at the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census with a comparison of ages from the 1850 census of same individuals. Here is the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. information for Martin Smith with age categories for males and correspondingly females as well:

              Males       Females
Martin, 187       1 (-10), 2 (10-15), 0 (16-18), 0 (18-25), 1 (26-45), 0 (45+)       3       1       0       1       0       0

Martin Smith, 187, is shown between (26-45) and 74 in the 1850 census--he should be 44 years of age in 1820.
Frances Smith, 187, is shown between (18-25) but 76 in the 1850 census--she should be 46 years of age in 1820. Probably not, Frances, wife of Martin Smith in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census.

Thomas Smith, son of Martin, 187, is shown between (10-15) and 43 in the 1850 census--he should be 13 years of age in 1820.
Martha Smith, daughter of Martin, 187, is shown (-10) and 41 in the 1850 census--she should be 9 years of age in 1820.

In the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census [William] Martin Smith shows one male (-10), one male (10-15), two females (-10) and one female between (10-15) that have not as yet been fully identified. While it may difficult to discover the unknown females by name an educated guess can be made from the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census regarding missing males. One of [William] Martin Smith's two sons in the (10-15) range named Thomas Smith as a given. Provided all of his children lived then that leaves one (10-15) and three individuals to choose from the 1850 census under 10 years in 1820. Subtracting thirty years from 1850 should show individuals less than 10 years of age in 1820. For a boys under 10 there are: Oliver P. Smith (age 30), born 1820; William Smith (age 34), born 1816; Samuel L. Smith (age 36), born 1814; John C. Smith (age 37), born 1813 or Lewis Smith (age 39), born 1811.

In the 1850, Chatham Co., N.C. census is found Oliver P. Smith (age 30), born 1820, dwelling 1072, married Lydia Smith (age 30), born 1820. Children of Oliver P. and Lydia Smith: Wm. M. Smith (age 8), born 1842; James Smith (age 6), born 1844; Eli B. Smith (age 1), born 1849 and Wm. A. Smith (age 2/12), born 1850. The "Wm. M. Smith" is hard to ignore combined with "Wm. A. Smith" and these abbreviations seem to be calling out William Martin as well as William Alfred Smith. Oliver P. Smith is a good fit as brother of Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776.

Another go choice is found with William Smith (age 34), born 1816, dwelling 816, married Mary Smith, born 1818. Children of William and Mary Smith: Martha L. Smith, born 1839; Emprior Smith, born 1849 and Sally Smith, born 1844. The reader may recall, "Another child of Thomas'; son of Capt. Fancis Smith, born 1715, is William Smith who married Sara Pryor. (A Thomas Smith will of 1850, Wayne Co., N.C., names three sisters "Winaford, Pryer and Clarky." A "Pryer" descendant is shown as "Emprior" in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census, page 405b, dwelling 816 and nearby is Martin Smith, Jr., dwelling 791.) Capt. William "Billy" Smith, born 1755; son of Capt. Francis Smith also had familar descendant names appearing in the 1850 Chatham census through sons Francis "Frank" Smith, William Smith as well as daughters Elizabeth, Nancy and Sallie Smith. Near William Smith's 1850 dwelling is Martin Smith (age 56), born 1794, in dwelling 791. William may have been closer family relation to Martin Smith, Jr., than originally thought.

The other is Samuel L. Smith (age 36), born 1814, dwelling 917, married Mary Ann Smith, born 1820. Children of Samuel L. and Mary Ann Smith: Marion A. Smith, born 1843; Margaret A. Smith, born 1847 and James C. Smith, born 1848. There's a Rachel C. Siler (age 18), listed as well. There is also a Conner Smith, born 1823, dwellng 1012, married Nancy Smith, born 1831. Children of Conner and Nancy Smith: Marion Smith, born 1846, and Winey A. Smith, born 1849. Each Marion may have something to do with Francis Marion Smith, born 1733; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 and son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591. Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named a son "Francis M. Smith" The "M" must have been in relation to those Marion Smiths of the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census.

There is also John C. Smith, (age 37), born 1813, dwelling 754, married Charlot, born 1825. Children of John C. and Charlot Smith: James Smith, born 1844; Amay Smith, born 1846 and Elizabeth Smith, born 1848. Last in a search of the 1850 Chatham census for a boy under 10 years of age in 1820 is Lewis Smith, (age 39), born 1811, dwelling 1011, married Cinderilla Smith, born 1824. Children: none or unknown. There are no John or Lewis Smith family members in memory or easily found in any descending lines from [William] Martin Smith, born 1776.

There is also the missing male, age (10-15), of [William] Martin Smith's in the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census but only one individual between the age of 40 and 45 years for 1850. "Ipias?"/Elias? Smith (age 44), born 1806, dwelling 1170, married Nancy Smith, born 1811. Children of Ipias/Elias and Nancy Smith: Lucinda Smith, born 1838; Levi B. Smith, born 1840; Sena Smith, born 1842; Urias Smith, born 1844; Calvin Smith, born 1846; Maurice W. Smith, born 1847 and Peter A. Smith, born 1849. Also in household are: Betsey Smith (nickname for Elizabeth), born 1802; Polly Smith (nickname for Mary), born 1812 and William Smith, born 1775. Elias as an unrecognised son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776 has potential but especially with William Smith, born 1775.

Concerning the given name Maurice there is a Samuel Smith, Jr., Col., born 1729, Essex, Va., died 1800; son of Samuel Smith, born 1694, Middlesex, Va. Children of William Smith: Samuel Smith, born about 1694, James Webb Smith, born 1770; John Granville Smith, born 1772; William B. Smith, born 1774; Maurice Smith, born 1776; Thomas Smith, born 1779 and Alexander Smith, born 1781. So, William Smith, age 75, could be Col. Smith's William B. Smith, born 1774. However, Alexander, 197 of the 1800 Chatham census shows him to be (45+) which does not seem to match Alexander Smith, born 1781. Could these year dates be incorrect?. There are more than two William B.s, Alexanders and seemingly two "Granville" Smiths to account for in the late 1700s.

Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; named his first two sons: Nathan F. Smith and James R. Smith. That means the missing male under 10 years of age in 1820 could be John C. Smith's, born 1813, son. John C. Smith's son James Smith, born 1844, made James a possible uncle of Martin Alexander Smith and there are several Nathans in Va. and N.C. census and tax records but it was probably the Nathan A. Smith (age 18), born 1832, that Martin Alexander Smith had something to do with in Chatham Co., N.C. Nathan A. Smith, born 1832; son of Lewis Smith, born 1798, dwelling 1082; was 18 years of age in 1850 and perhaps someone Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838, in his early years possibly looked to for guidance. Martin Alexander Smith doesn't choose his Father's given name of Thomas until Thomas Jackson Smith, born 1878, near the time of his Father's death. The Thomas "Jackson" Smith name may result from admiration for Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson just as has been the case in Dixie with Gen. Robert E. Lee since the War. Another possibility was a show of connection with William Isham Smith, born 1730; son of William Smith, born 1688, married Hannah Jackson but this linkage has not been examined fully.

In the 1800 Chatham Co., N.C. census there is found in dwelling 189: Lewis (Levi) Smith, 1(45+); Mark Smith, (unkn.); James, Sr., 1(45+); Willis Smith, 1(26-45); Frances Smith, 1(45+); Wily Smith, 1(26-45); Isham Smith, 1(26-45); William Smith, 2(45+); [William] Martin Smith, 1(45+) and "Lyles?" Smith, (unkn.). Brunswick Co., Va.: William Smith, born 1688 married in about 1728 Ann Isham. William and Ann had children: Curthbert Smith; Sarah Smith, born 1720; Lucy Smith, born 1722; Isham Smith, born 1726; Josiah Smith, born about 1728; William Smith, born 1730 and Susannah Smith, born 1737. It was William Isham Smith (Brunswick Co., Va.), born 1730; married Hannah Jackson, born 1744, that had children: Ann Rogers Smith; Jany Lyon Smith; William Smith, born about 1752; Henry Smith, born about 1754; Isham Smith, born about 1756; Mary Pharr Smith, born 1762; Harbard Smith, born about 1763; Jean Gilliam Smith, born about 1764; Nancy Ann Smith, born about 1766; John Smith, born about 1770; James Munford Smith, born about 1774 and Susanna Franse Smith, born about 1774. Isham Smith, born about 1756, appears to be Isham Smith, age 1(26-45) in the 1800 census who no longer shows in Chatham Co., N.C. after that date.

Asa is probably the lest common of Smith given names possible and a search turns up the 1790 Montgomery Co., N.C. census. Given names of that census are: Alexander, John, Joseph, John, Nathan, Isham, John, James, Richard, John, Joseph, John, Asa, William, Joseph and Sherwood. There appears to be a high representation of Johns but there is a grouping of Alexander, John and Joseph and another grouping of Asa, William and Joseph. Both sets of names may associate with Thomas' sons. A closer examination of John Smith, born 1747; son of Francis Smith, Capt., born 1715; shows he had a son named Joseph M. Smith and Anthony Waddy Smith. A John, Joseph and [Alfred?] William Smith are shown with an Asa in the 1790 Montgomery Co. census. As Smiths and Martins moved out across Virginia, Anthony Smith can be found in the 1782 Henry Co., Va. Personal Property Tax List.

martin Alexander Smith is found in the 1850 and 1860 Chatham Co., N.C. census as Alexander Smith. In Confederate records he's listed as "Alexandrew Smith, Pvt" but signed "Alexander Smith." Confederate enlistment--50 Reg't North Carolina Infantry (State Troops), Co. F (Moore Sharp Shooters). Description Where Born: Chatham N.C., Age 24 years; occupation Farmer, Height 6 feet 1 inches. OLIVER P. SMITH, born 1820; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; children: Wm. M. Smith, born 1842; James Smith, born 1844; John Smith, born 1846; Martha Smth, born 1847; Eli B. Smith, born 1849; Wm. A. Smith, born 1850. (Oliver's wife: Lydia Smith)

ALSTON SMITH, born 1807; children: William A. Smith, born 1850, in household Elizabeth Smith, born 1780. (Alston's wife: Martha Smith)

MARTIN ALEXANDER SMITH, born 1838; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; children: Nathan F. Smith, born 1856; James R. Smith, born 1859; Mary E. Smith, born 1866; William J. Smith, born 1874; Otelia Smith, born 1878; Otelia Smith, born 1878; Horace A. Smith, born 1878; Thomas Jackson Smith, born 1878; Rosa Smith, born 1889; Willie [Alfred?] Smith, born 1891; Frank Smith, born 1895; Alexander Smith, born 1897; Fanny Smith, born 1897; Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900; Nathan Smith, born 1902; Julia Smith, born 1905; Mollie (Martha) Smith, born 1907 and Betsie (Elizabeth) Smith, born 1909. (Martin's wife: married 1 Sarah Drake, 2 Sarah E. Womack, married 3 Sousie Cox)

CHARLIE MARTIN SMITH, born 1900; son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; children: William "Billy" Alfred Smith, born 1932; Robert Martin Smith, born 1934; Charlie Ray Smith, born 1936; Samuel O'Ree Smith, born 1938; Franklin Eugene Smith, born 1940. Female children: none. (Charlie's wife: Ida D. Crowley)

George Smith named Alfred W. Smith as his first son. Lemuel Smith had sons: Berry, Lemuel, then Alfred Smith. Some of [William] Martin Smith's, born 1776, children are unknown to account for an absence of his William Alfred Smith. Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named Martin Alexander Smith and William A. Smith. Martin Alexander Smith named a William J. Smith then a Willie Smith. The lineup of highlighted Smiths indicates that Martin Alexander's "Willie" was probably an "Alfred" also.

Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900; son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named his first son William "Billy" Alfred Smith. Charlie Martin Smith was among the last children of Martin Alexander Smith and Sousie Cox, thus, family history was experienced through his elderly Father and later siblings such as Thomas Jackson Smith (later left for Montana) and Willie Smith. Willie, was around the time Charlie Martin Smith approached 17 years of age and the passing away of Martin Alexander Smith (1917) which may account for Charlie Martin Smith's first son being named William "Billy" Alfred Smith.

Lemuel Smith, born 1798; had sons: Berry, Lemuel and Alfred Smith. Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named Martin Alexander Smith and William A. Smith. Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838 had a son Thomas Smith, born 1807, who named a son William Alfred Smith. Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900; son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; named a son William "Billy" Alfred Smith, born 1932. William Alfred Smith was probably an uncle of George Smith who named his first son Alfred W. Smith and [William] Martin Smith, born 1776, a First Cousin of George Smith, born 1792 and Lemuel Smith, born 1798.

Lemuel Smith can be found in the 1782 Land Taxes, Pittsylvania Co., Va.: Charles Smith, 1700; Thomas Smith, 2287; John Smith, 4,048; Hezekiah Smith, 930; Samuel/Lemuel Smith, 632; Minen Smith, 112; George Smith, 894; Peyton Smith, 612; Booker Smith, 150; Ralph Smith, 898; William Smith, 150. A slash seen between two names of "Samuel/Lemuel" seemed to make Lemuel a nickname or odd punctuation for Samuel Smith. With Samuel L. Smith, born 1814, dwelling 917 of the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census it may even be possible the slash was meant for another purpose. There is a headstone placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution--Lemuel Smith, b. 29 Feb. 1776 - d. 10 Nov. 1821, Matthews Township, Chatham Co., N.C., D.A.R., 1963, p. 25. It seems the 1776 year does not seem to fit Lemuel's participation in the 1776 war, however, the year Lemuel Smith was born may not be provable. (Year-date clues on Peyton, son of Lawrence Smith--Peyton Smith, marriage to Judith Wadlow, 17 Mar. 1763, Goochland Co., Va. Marriages.)

Pittsylvania Co., Va., Marriages (1700-1799) shows Lemuel Smith and Bethania Perkins married 13 Oct. 1778, Bondsman, Joseph Akin, Father, [Col.] Peter Perkins, Witness, Nicholas Perkins. In the 1820 Chatham Co. census next to Abner Smith, born 1781; son of George Smith, born 1746; in dwelling 215 is Peter P. [Perkins] Smith, age (26-45), 216; Charles Smith, age (26-45), 216 and Lemuel Smith, age (45+), 216. (Patriots Biographies--On April 18, 1781, Lansford produced his commission and took oath, thus being appointed ensign in Captain Lemuel Smith’s Company. William Bethell Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and listed are: Benjamin Smith, Private, Va.; Peter Smith [a brother of Lemuel, Sr.?], Private, N.C., Colonel Peter Perkins, Pittsylvania Co., Va., battle at Guilford courthouse...)

Peter Smith (age 70), born 1780, dwelling 1042 appears in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census not far from Allen P. Smith (age 31), dwelling 1013. John Smith (age 42), dwelling 1050 and his first son Lemuel Smith (age 6) and his second son William Smith (age 2) are also close by. There is Nicholas Smith (age 27), dwelling 1069, with Polly P. Smith (age 4) and James L. Smith (age 3). Oliver P. Smith (age 30), dwelling 1072 has a first son by the name of Wm. M. (age 8), James (age 6), Eli B. (age 1) and Wm. A. (age 2/12). If recalled it was Lemuel Smith, married Bethania Perkins, 1778, Col. Peter Perkins Father and Nicholas Perkins witness. What the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census of given names and initials seem to be telling is that some of those "P"s are for Perkins.

Peter Smith was probably a son of Lemuel and Bethania Smith with probable descendants of Lemuel, Martin, Jr., Oliver P., John T. and Nicholas. A good guess might have it that Oliver P. Smith's "Wm. M." stands for William Martin Smith, the "B" of Eli's name for Berry and "Wm. A." for William Alfred Smith. The relation of John T. Smith's, born 1796, son "Berry W. Smith" and Lemuel Smith's, born 1798, son "Berry Smith" seems to make William Berry Smith their Father and a brother of Peter Smith, born 1780. If Oliver P. Smith was a son of Samuel/Lemuel Smith (less likely) then the choice of names given to Oliver's first and last sons point a family relation back to Alexander Martin Smith's Grandfather, [William] Martin Smith, born 1776, who is a probable brother of Samuel/Lemuel Smith. The Samuel/Lemuel connection explains the Samuel Smith name chosen for the son of Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900, the son of Martin Alexander Smith.

To refresh memory of who Lemuel Smith of the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census is:

LEMUEL SMITH, born 1798, dwelling 985; son of William Berry Smith, born unknown; children: Berry Smith, born 1826; Margaret Smith, born 1827; Catharine Smith, born 1830; Martha Smith, born 1833; "Roxanna" (Rosanna) Smith, born 1835; Lemuel Smith, born 1836; Sophia Smith, born 1838; Alfred Smith, born 1840 and Lucy Smith, born 1842.

JOHN T. SMITH, born 1796, dwelling 1081; son of William Berry Smith can be found in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census with children: Berry W. Smith, born 1827; Lydia A. Smith, born 1830, Bethena Smith, born 1832 and John L. Smith, born 1837.

John T. Smith's relationship with Lemuel Smith, born 1798, married Bethania Perkins, 1778, cannot be missed. First, there is Lemuel's son Berry Smith and John T.'s son Berry W. Smith. Second, we have Lemuel's wife Bethania and John T.'s daughter "Bethena" where there is only the missing "i" between the names in pronunciation. The linking of these families practically gives John T. Smith as a brother of Lemuel Smith, born 1798 with their Father's name as William Berry Smith. With the naming of John T. Smith's son John L. Smith, born 1837, Lemuel's first name might be John Lemuel Smith. Martin Smith, Jr., who also had a daughter named Bethany Smith gives a subtle clue of his being a relation to this set of Smiths as well.

The 1840 Chatham Co., N.C. Census Index shows Martin Smith, Jr., dwelling 161; Jesse Smith, dwelling 163 and [William] Martin Smith and Mark Smith in dwelling 168. In the 1850 Chatham Co. census there is a Jesse L. Smith, born 1837; son of Elizabeth R. Smith, dwelling 779. In 778 there is George Smith (age 58), born 1797 so it seems Jesse, 163 is a relative in need of identification to help with Martin Smith, born 1776. As seen by dwelling numbers, Jesse Smith is between Martin, Jr., Martin and Mark, 168, but there are two families to which Jesse might belong. Jesse Smith may be the son of Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735, who had a Jesse Smith, born 1762, or another Jesse Smith, born 1765, of John "Little River" Smith, born 1720. Jesse, born 1765, is reported to have died in Franklin Co., Ga., 1842, but he did have his own Jesse, born 1810, who may have remained in Georgia.

It appears Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named a daughter Julia Smith, born 1905 (Oglethorpe Co., Ga.). Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74; son of Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; named John A. [Anderson] Smith, born 1796, dwelling 854; and John Ellis Smith, born 1798, dwelling 867; both appear in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census. [William] Martin Smith, born 1776, is in dwelling 408, Thomas Smith, born 1807, is in dwelling 422 and Martin Smith, Jr., dwelling 791. John A. [Anderson] Smith had a son named Caleb McKendree Smith, born 1827 (Pickens Co., S.C.), who had a daughter named Julia Smith, born unknown. Smiths living among each other in Chatham Co. shared the names of their offspring in this case that were not necessarily of long repeating lineage. A little ways down the road is Ambrose Smith, born 1798, dwelling 976. Ambrose causes one to wonder if he might not be the son of Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74. Both this later Ambrose and Caleb have daughters named Martha Smith and it was Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74, married Martha Nancy Posey, born 1769.

Children of Ambrose Smith (age 52), born 1798, dwelling 975; Tally Smith (wife?), born 1818; Martha Smith, born 1826; Spencer Smith, born 1829; Fred'k Smith, born 1827 (remark "twins"); Cary Smith, born 1827 (remark "twins"); Green Smith, born 1837. Nearly next door in dwelling 977 can be found Fanny Smith, born 1773 (Virginia); Basil T. Smith, born 1825 (N.C.); Anderson Smith, born 1827; Winey Smith, born 1839; Nancy C. Smith, born 1821; Thos. H. Smith, born 1833 and Greenberry Smith, born 1839. By "Va." and "N.C." annotations in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census and those Pickens, S.C. Smiths it is notable that these Smiths traveled a good distance in the pioneer days of Virginia and North Carolina.

If there can be evidence proving relationships it rests on census records of those dwelling near Martin Smith, born 1776. Here are dwelling names and numbers by census year and as appears except for bracketed "[...]" information denoting updates. Details on claim of Smith family relations for Chatham Co., N.C. are:

John Smith, born 1747; son of Francis Smith, Capt., born 1715; shows he had a son named Joseph M. Smith. A John, Joseph and [Alfred?] William Smith are shown with an Asa in the 1790 Montgomery Co. census. Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named a son Asa F. Smith.

[William] Martin Smith, born 1776, named two children Martha Smith and Nancy Smith just as did Drury Smith, born after 1745, and three other names of Drury Smith's family match closely with the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census--William B. Smith, born 1770 (dwelling 190); Daniel Smith, born 1774 (dwelling 193) and [William] Martin Smith, born 1776 (dwelling 189).

Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named a daughter "Rosa" in 1889. In the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census is Lemuel Smith, born 1798, is a likely cousin of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776. Lemuel had a daughter named Rosanna, age 15.

Lawrence Smith, Col., born 1657, named a daughter Lucy Smith. His son Robert Smith, born about 1733, brother of Capt. Francis Smith, was an uncle of William "Billy" Smith, born 1755 and John Smith, born 1747. Robert Smith named a daughter Lucy Smith that made it a name of generations. Lemuel Smith of the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census had one daughter Rosanna Smith and another Lucy Smith.

Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900; son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; named a son William "Billy" Alfred Smith and another Robert Martin Smith. A Robert of an earlier time--Robert Smith, born about 1733, brother of Capt. Francis Smith, born 1715, and was an uncle of William "Billy" Smith, born 1755.

Given names of Francis, Frank and Franklin have been used by certain Smiths of the past and as late as Charley Martin Smith, born 1900, son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838, who named Franklin Eugene Smith, born 1940.

Pittsylvania Co., Va., 1782 Land Taxes, show a Samuel/Lemuel Smith, with a slash seen between two names of "Samuel/Lemuel" seemed to make odd punctuation. Peter P[erkins] Smith, born 1780, shown in the 1820 Chatham Co. census is shown in dwelling 216 with Charles Smith, age 1(18-25) and Lemuel Smith, age 1(45+). Lemuel Smith and Bethania Perkins married 13 Oct. 1778, Father, Col. Peter Perkins. Peter Smith's likely sons of the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census are: Samuel L. Smith and Allen P. Smith. Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900; son of Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; had a son named Samuel Smith, born 1938.

Martin Alexander Smith named a son Francis M. Smith and there are two Marion Smiths shown in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census as first sons of different households. Francis was most likely named after their Father or prior ancestor, Francis Marion Smith, born 1733; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591.

A son of Capt. Francis Smith, Thomas Ballard Smith, had a son William Smith who married Sara Pryor. A Thomas Smith will of 1850, Wayne Co., N.C., names three sisters "Winaford, Pryer and Clarky." A possible "Pryer" descendant is shown as a female by the name "Emprior" in dwelling 816 of 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census. Nearby is Martin Smith, Jr., dwelling 791.

With these clues an attempt should be made to trace individuals from the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census back to a Smith family of origin. First, there was a direct living ancestor and grandson who knew of Martin Alexander Smith's full name and told that he went by "M.A." Smith. Confederate records show him going by "Alexandrew" Smith, signed Alexander Smith in 1862 then by "M.A. Smith" for a "Confederate.--50--N.C.--Alexandrew Smith--Pvt, Co.F (Moore Sharp Shooters), 50th Reg't North Infantry (State Troops)--Company Muster-in and Descriptive Roll--Apr. 21 1862--Description: Where born Chatham N.C.--Age 24 years." In another Muster he is listed as a Musician. Joe Brown Martin of Locust Grove, Ga. told in his own words (1989) that "M.A." was also in a Confederate band.

Going back to the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census Thomas Smith, born 1807, dwelling 422, can be found with Alexander Smith (age 17). Martin Smith, born 1776, dwelling 408 is nearby and Thomas Smith named William A. Smith, born 1839, and Martha Smith, born 1836. Martin Smith, born 1776, had a daughter named Martha Smith, born 1809 and another Nancy Smith, born 1814. It is believed that Martha and Nancy comprise the first and middle names of past Smith females and used by an associated family of the name of Posey. Martin Smith, born 1807 had another son named Oliver P. Smith, born 1820, dwelling 1072, living among a trio of similar aged individuals. Oliver named two sons Wm. M. Smith, born 1842, and another William A. Smith, born 1836. Oliver having named "Wm. M." gives his Father's name of William Martin Smith, born 1776. Oliver named a daughter Martha Smith, born 1847. Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74; son of Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; Joshua Smith, born 1774, married Martha Nancy Posey, born 1769.

Alston Smith, born 1807, dwelling 94, had a first son William A. Smith, potentially making Alston a son of William [Alfred] Smith or he was named after a family member of Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74, who had a son named John Anderson Allston Smith, born 1797. Ambrose Joshua Smith's Father was Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born 1730/35, Louisa Co., Va., and his Mother was Judith Ann Anderson, born 1704, Hanover Co., Virginia. Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith's Father was Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703, Hanover Co., Virginia. There was also a George Smith, born 1792, dwelling 778, that had a son named Alfred W. Smith. With Martin Alexander Smith's son Charlie Martin Smith, born 1900, who had his own son, William "Billy" Alfred Smith, "Alfred" tends to be understood among past William A. Smiths.

More evidence these Smith families were of the same clan can be seen in Martin Alexander Smith's daughter Julia Smith, born 1905, and the son of John A. Smith's (John Anderson Allston Smith), born 1797, dwelling 854, having had a son Caleb McKendree Smith, born 1827. Caleb also named a daughter, Julia Smith, born unknown, and another Martha Smith, born 1853. No doubt Martin Alexander Smith and Caleb would have known of each other in 1850 Chatham Co., North Carolina.

Thomas Smith, born 1807, Father of Martin Alexander Smith named a son Francis M. Smith and there are present in two households, two first-born Marion Smiths in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census. In their ancestry is a Francis Marion Smith, born about 1733; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591.

Both Francis Smith, Capt., born 1715, and Joshua Ambrose Smith, born 1772/74, can be traced back to a common ancestor:

FRANCIS SMITH, CAPT., born 1715; son of William Smith, born about 1680; son of Lawrence Smith, Maj., born 1629; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591.
JOSHUA AMBROSE SMITH, born 1772/74; son of Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591.

The reader may recall how Martin Alexander Smith, born 1838; named a daughter "Rosa" while Lemuel Smith, born 1798, named a daughter Rosanna Smith as found in the 1850 Chatham County census. It was Francis Smith, born 1715, with a son Thomas Ballard Smith that named a daughter by the familar Rosanna name. There are other corresponding names from Francis, William "Billy" Alfred, Pryor to Emprior, Sallie and Martha that all correspond to later Smiths of this line.

There are several individuals in the 1820 Chatham Co., N.C. census that can be matched with Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith (ver. 2), born about 1735, and his son John Buckner Smith, born 1758. All these are in dwelling 221: Benjamin Smith (26-45); Leonard Smith (18-25); John Smith (18-25); Ambrose Smith (18-25); William [Christopher] Smith, Jr. (26-45) and William [Christopher] Smith, Sr. (45+). By adding "William" to Christopher's name individuals sink together that otherwise could not be found. Again is seen the overwhelming point of this connection with Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703 and their proximity with Martin Smith, dwelling 187.

[WILLIAM] CHRISTOPHER SMITH [or Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, Ver. 2], RootsWeb ID: I630027457, born about 1735; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; female children: Nancy Smith, born 1784; Mary Smith and Ann Smith. Also--Thomas Smith, born about 1754; John Buckner Smith, born 1758; Jesse Smith, born 1762; Meade Smith; Benjamin Smith; Harmon Smith, born 1769; Joshua [Ambrose] Smith, born 1772; ([William] Christopher Smith, Jr., born 1779/80; William Smith); Hampton Smith and Job Smith. (Christopher's wives: unkn. Buckner and Mary Barnett-Miles)

The above Ambrose Smith (18-25) is the son of Hampton Smith, born 1766; son of [William] Christopher Smith/Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703. That Ambrose appears in the 1850 Chatham Co., N.C. census as Ambrose Smith (age 52), dwelling 976. In the same census Martin Smith, 187, and Martin Smith, Jr., 195, appear not distant from Ambrose Smith, dwelling 200. John Buckner Smith, born 1758, had his own Joshua Smith, born 1772. Both Ambrose Smiths are ties back to Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703.

JOHN BUCKNER SMITH, born 1758; son of Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born about 1735; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703; Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630 (and Mary Elizabeth Fairbanks, born 1622, England); son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; children: Aaron Smith, born 1785; John Smith, born 1786; Thomas Smith, born 1788; Stephen Smith, born 1790; Mary Smith, born 1795; Moses George Washington Smith, born 1805; Epharaim Smith, born 1810; Leonard Smith; Robert Smith; Elizabeth Smith; Charlotte Smith; James Smith; Rhoda Smith, Isaac Smith; Ruben Smith; Joshua Smith, born 1772; Hiram Smith [born about 1780] and Archibald Smith.

The children of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703, Hanover Co., Va, died 1759 Rowan/Chatham Co., N.C. and Judith Ann Spann, born about 1700, Va. are: John "Little River" Smith, born about 1720; Christopher B. "Kitt" Smith, born 1730; Nicholas Smith, born about 1731; Ambrose Joshua Smith, III, born 1731; Judith Smith, born about 1732; Francis Marion Smith, born about 1733; Zachariah Smith, Sr., born 1732; William [Alfred] Smith, born about 1738 and Charles H. Smith, born about 1740.

The Thomas D. Smith name enjoyed at least two generations of Smith lineage in Chatham County. Elizabeth R. Smith, born 1805, dwelling 779; probable widow of John Smith had a son named Thomas D. Smith. Thomas Smith, born 1807; son of [William] Martin Smith, born 1776; named a Thomas D. Smith, born 1845; ans so did Thomas' son, William A. Smith, born 1838. The number of name matches between Drury Smith, born about 1745; son of Thomas Smith, Capt., born 1725; of Rockingham Co., N.C. and John "Little River" Smith, born 1720, are hard to ignore when looking for a Smith match to another. "Thomas D." always appeared in the census list of names after William A. [Alfred] Smith and "Little River" as a son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, II, born 1703, had Thomas Smith, born about 1775, in the right time and place to have known Martin Smith, born 1776.

many Smith related families moved into Chatham Co., N.C. with ties back to the coasts of Virginia. By tracing individuals and similar spellings to dwelling numbers it is no stretch of these details to say that Martin Smith's, full name was William Martin Smith, born 1776; son of William Alfred Smith, born about 1738; son of Joshua Ambrose Smith, II, born 1703; son of Ambrose Joshua Smith, I, born about 1660; son of Christopher Smith, II, Lt., born 1630; son of Christopher Smith, I, born 1591; son of Thomas "Customer" Smythe, Sir, born about 1530; son of John Smythe, Sir, born about 1495; son of Richard Smythe, born about 1460
