Ruth -- my oldest Newell ancestor that I have been able to identify was James Newell bc1795-1800 somewhere in NC. He married Sarah Boyd, dau of Robert Boyd, of Mecklenburg Co. Robert Boyd was in Mecklenburg sometime before 1810 because he is on that census with his four young daughters, which would include Sarah born in 1807. Newells migrated into the Mecklenburg area at least as early as 1766 based on a will of Francis Newell of Mecklenburg. But I cannot connect my James to any of these families. Francis stated that he came from PA. He and a William Newell were county officials in Cabarrus/Mecklenburg in the late 1780s. Would your John possibly be connected with the John and Lucy (Hyde) Newell family group of 1790-1800 Warren Co., NC? I cannot connect to this group. Some of their descendants went into Pulaski Co., KY in early 1800s, into TN, and others down to Tensas Parish, LA where they founded Newellton, LA.
