To answer your question regarding Caswell County. It was never part of Virginia. Prior to becoming Caswell it was part of Orange County, NC. The area of Halifax County, Va south of the Dan River was the main area of dispute. Milton NC which is in Caswell County was the trading center for the residents of Halifax County, Va south of the Dan. You will find a lot of these residents marrying in North Carolina even though they resided in Virginia.
