Elizabeth Salter (my third cousin, four times removed), dau of Owen Salter and Lovey Salter has a death certificate. She was an inmate of the County Home and was married when she died in Beaufort 10 Mar 1917. Her 8 May 1844 date of birth listed, is consistent with her 1850 Hunting Quarters census. She was therefore, not too young to have a daughter Nancy Jane born 19 Mar 1867. Her second husband David Salter, son of James Salter and Elizabeth Mason was still living in the County Home for the 1920 Beaufort census. That Elizabeth had a previous marriage is documented by their 1910 White Oak, Carteret census. David also has a death certificate, though having been an inmate for about fifteen years, no one could have been expected to know when he was born. He died 24 Jun 1931 a widower and may have been buried with his wife somewhere nearby.
I can't seem to find any 1870 Carteret census which includes a three year old Nancy, Jane or Nancy Jane, Salter or Mason that also shows Thomas Mason of any age as head. Could you please state what township and family number this is? I don't know much about Thomas Mason, and would like to find out more. He was a son of Benjamin Mason and Esther Styron who married ca 1845 when he was about age 25 to Keziah and had three sons. I thought he may have been deceased before 1870, but you've indicated otherwise.
