Their children bought a headstone which was placed in Broad Creek Community Cemetery. The inscription reads: "SALTER / FATHER / JOSHUA JULY 14, 1861 APR 26, 1938 / MOTHER / CATHERN DEC 25, 1854 MAY 16, 1944 / OUR DEVOTED PARENTS"

This yields a death certificate for "Catherine" that provides Horatio Frost and Julia Frances Owens as parents. The informant was Norman Guthrie, a possible son in law. Unfortunately Joshua's death certificate is apparently missing (I checked Carteret County for both April 1933 and 1938). Joshua is enumerated with his sister Eliza Jane in 1880 White Oak, and she does have a death certificate. She died unmarried from tuberculosis in Dorthea Dix hospital, but at least this corroborates Owen as father.

I agree with the 5 Jan 1841 Carteret marriage of Owen Salter and Lovy Salter, and believe the 1840 census for which Owen is head of household was taken just after the death of his father. Owen was apparently the oldest male with several siblings and possibly a widowed stepmother or aunt represented.
