Lee, you and I have been messing with this lately. But am posting here in case another cousin comes around lost as we have been these last years:

Christina S Melton - Hansen, 14 July 2010. This is what I think I have managed to deduce in the last 24 hours: Nancy Jane is known to be born in 1867 to Elizabeth maiden name Salter. I would like to get a birth record for her. In the meantime, tt is documented that she appears in 1870 census with a THOMAS MASON as head of house and her mother with her and with him. Presumably this is her birth father. In 1878 approx Elizabeth Salter - Mason remarries David Salter. In 1880 Nancy Jane is 13 years old and appears in her stepfather's family's household with his father JAMES SALTER as head and her stepfather David listed as well as her mother ELizabeth listed. The family of Nancy Jane's mother Elizabeth and her stepfather David live as neighbors in many of the census' and they have the same birth surnames. David, Nancy Jane's stepfather, is son of James & Elizabeth Salter. While marriage record for Nancy's mother Elizabeth indicate she is the daughter of Owen & Lovey Salter. Perhaps David & Elizabeth are cousins. At any rate I feel comfortable with these as answers to the many years of confusion about whether Nancy Jane is a SALTER or a MASON. She is both. Mason is her maiden name by her biological father and Salter her surname by her stepfather. Salter also happens to be her mother's maiden name.
