There is no indication that Robert Lee Abernethy was alive in 1910. His widow, Mary Jane Florence (Finger) Abernethy is a widow, living at River Bend, Gaston Co., NC, at the time o the census taken on 23 April 1910.

I find a lengthy newspaper article in the Charlotte Observed from 1909 stating that "Col. Robert Abernethy" was shot three times in a struggle with his son Ruben over a gun when they argued about treatment of Mrs. Abernethy by her husband. Robert Abernethy died and the son was exonerated. It states that Col. Abernethy was a native of Mecklenberg County, was survived by children and brothers Rev. John Abernethy of Goldsboro, Frank and Walter Abernethy of Mathews. He was described as a unique character who ran for political office at different times. Let me know if you want this article. It is dated Oct 15, 1909, stating that Col. Abernethy died October 14.

His estate papers are on file at the NC State Archives and you could probably obtain a copy there. The newspaper article gives many details of this horrific incident. You can contact me at
