Caswell Smith and Barringer and Ury name HELP

I have been trying to figure out my mother in laws ide if the family for years now and have hit a brick wall. Since she was orphaned at a yougn age, the information is sketchy. Her mother made a book for her before she died and list a family tree. Her father was Carl Garner Smith of Winston Salem NC killed in WWII. She knew her grandfather, Lewis Carl Smith Sr. 1896-1982. of Winston Salem. The mystery come in here. Her grandfather was Martin Victor Smith born 1854 or 55 in Cabarrus Co. Acoording to the book she has Martin Victor Smith was born in Mt. Pleasant, Cabarrus Co. North Carolina, his father was a Barringer and his mother's maiden name was Ury. By the 1860 census of Cabarrus Co. North Carolina, Victor Martin Barringer is living with the Caswell Smith family of Mt. Pleasant, Cabarrus Co. North Carolina. Caswell Smith was married to Ameila Caroline Ury. This is possibly some relation to Martin Barringer's birth mother. Martin Victor's surname at that time of the 1860 cenus is still Barringer. At some point he adopts the name Smith, and even in his death record it lists his adopted parents as his father and mother. Tyrying to determine who is Victor Martin's real parents? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
