Can you tell me if there is anything in your book about the Field, Bell, VanPelt, Wilkerson, Lindsay, Ross, Corrigan families, or about the Coddle Creek Church or the Coddle Creek Academy? My 5th great grandfather, Walter Bell, settled on land adjoining that of the Coddle Creek Presbyterian Church on the border between Iredell and Cabarrus Counties (before either of those counties were formed) in circa 1752. The Church was founded in 1753, and just had its 250th anniversary celebration this October. The Bells and most of the other families listed above lived in that area from the late 1700s onward. My great grandmother, Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947), daughter of Levi Bell & Mary Jane Van Pelt, was born there. She married Ernest Marion Field (1866-1904) son of John Andrew Field and Mary Adeline Wilkerson in 1888. Ernest M. Field died young, leaving his wife a widow with a large family to raise. I am told she kept the Mooresville telephone exchange with the switchboard in her front parlor. We have a picture of the family standing outside the house c. 1910, with all the telephone wires going in to the house. They moved to Greenville, SC around 1918, but Mary Rhetta's eldest daughter, Mary Bell Field (1890-1988)Mrs. Mason Goodman, remained in the area, and Mary Rhetta returned there to live in her last years. My grandfaher and his brothers and sister attended the Coddle Creek Academy when they were children. I would be most interested to learn if any of these folks are in your book. Best Regards, John Field Pankow Asheville, NC Notify Administrator about this message?
