(much belated, I just now read this interesting question, which I have also asked myself)
Many of my ancestors and others moved from Mecklenburg and Cabarrus to Georgia because of Georgia's land lotteries of the early 1800's. There were 6 drawings between 1805 and 1832. As they moved the Cherokee and Creek Indians out of N. Ga. they gave their land away in drawings.
