Thanks for the information. Every bit of information either helps to solve this family puzzle or contributes to additional questions.

Question: how certain are you that James Neel and Margaret McEwen-Neel were the parents of the Thomas Neel who married Jane/Jenny Neel (my line)? Jane and Thomas eventually moved to Sumner County, TN. There is a web site dedicated to them.

There is strong circumstantial indication, based upon wills and similar family first and middle names, that James and Margaret may have been Thomas' aunt and uncle, if related at all. And that Thomas and his brother Aaron and sisters were probably orphaned in either 1766 or 1777 when Thomas was a lad of 6 or 7. His father may have been Andrew Neel, another son of Thomas and Sarah. It would make sense that other family members raised these children and some folks might think that they were the parents rather than aunts and uncles.
