The information on John McKinley came from "Family Records" by the Lore Sisters. I'm not certain of some places of birth, marriage, or death as these were not included in the book. I have temporarily placed them in Cabarrus Co., NC. psw
There is information in this book written by Lloyd M. Query of Hamlet, NC in Sept 1953... with some additional info added and in brackets ( ) by the Lore sisters.
Our Great Great Grandfather David McKinley's son, JOHN:
John McKinley was born Oct. 18, 1764, and his wife, Frances Rogers, born April 8 1771, were married about 1788 and had 8 children. (22 Jul 1788)
Midas McKinley born 2 Apr 1789 moved to Alabama, no other data.
***Crasida was born 9 Aug 1790 and married a McLelland, cousin Tom McLelland's grandmother. [psw note... William S. McClellan and these are my ancestors.]
Silas McKinley, born Dec 11, 1793 moved to Alabama, no other data.
Hessey, born 6 Oct 1795 married Alphonso Alexander, who was cousin Cenie Harris' and cousin Jack Alexander's Mother.
Asa born 16 Oct 1797 was an M.D. and never married. (Died 3 Oct 1826)
Cenie McKinley was born (Mar 6) 1800 no data.
Quinas, b. 12 Apr 1802 .. no data.
Sydney b. 22 Apr 1804 moved to Texas. Don't know who he married.
Uncle Charlie McKinley went all the way to Texas and married a granddaughter of Sydney McKinley, which would be marrying his first cousin's daughter. (Sydney McK mar on 1 Mar 1827 Mary Crawford) (C.S. McKinley - Charley, married Addie May McKinley, daughter of Joe McKinley.) Willie Alexander, cousin Jack Alexander's son did the same thing. After his first wife died, he married her sister. They were his second cousins. They were daughters of Joe McKinley who was first cousin of our mother. One time, I presume before the War between the States, our grandfather Sandy McKinley went to Texas to visit his brother, Sydney. On his way back to NC he came through Mississippi and brought one of our great uncle Sandy Query's children (daughter) with him back to NC. Uncle Sandy had lost his wife and had moved back to NC, and for some reason perhaps this child was sick and couldn't come when the rest came. I think Uncle Sandy Query lived in Mississippi about seven years. Sandy McKinley, our grandfather was born June 5, 1807. See his record on another sheet. Statira McKinley b. 6 Jan 1809 married a COCHRAN. She was cousin Bell PHARR'S mother.
So you can see that our grandfather Sandy McKinley was one of ten children that were born or reared right where Lloyd Quay now lives, and of course was the home place of our mother, Mrs. John Caldwell Query. (Margaret Letitia McKinley) otherwise know as "Tish."
Our great, great grandfather, David McKinley, lived near Sossamon Springs, Cabarrus Co., NC and raised a large family. Charley and a daughter, Esther, by a first wife, and three sons and seven daughters by a last marriage. Sons were David, Moses and John (our great grandfather) David lived in upper Cabarrus County and Moses went to Tennessee. See daughters in Cousin Cenie Harris' letter.
Those who lived in the old John McKinley home, or better known as MACK STAFFORD'S:
1st gen - John McKinley
2nd gen - Sandy McKinley
3rd gen - Cornie McKinley Stafford
4th gen - Mary Stafford Quay
5th gen - Lloyd Quay, Sr.
6th gen - Lloyd Quay, Jr. David was a Revolutionary War veteran who, in 1782, acquired land near the headwaters of Anderson Creek (in the vicinity of Flowe's Store) and then built his log home near the renowned mineral water springs, first known as McKinley's Springs, later as Sossamon's Springs, and now as Sherrill's Springs. There David and his wife raised a large family. David was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, about 1730 and emigrated to America with his parents about 1743, where they landed at New Castle and then settled in Pennsylvania, in which colony David was married about 1753 to Jane Caldwell. After Jane's death, David married Mary Carson who continued to help rear David and Jane's children. -- Jane Reynolds Harris
According to descendant Lloyd M. Query of Hamlet, NC. (history written in 1953) David had a son and daughter by a first marriage -- wife unnamed, and 3 sons and 7 daughters by a second marriage... wife also unnamed. He lists the sons names, but refers to Cousin Cenie Harris' letter for the daughters. I haven't found her letter. Portions of Lloyd's history below:
"David lived near Sossamon Springs, Cabarrus Co., NC and raised a large family... I had thought at one time that all the McKinleys in the South sprang from our gr. gr. grandfather, David McKinley, but I doubt that now, although it may be true. "
