If your information came from the census, I may be able to offer some help. In many of the older census from 1790 to about 1840 the county was partitioned off into districts called regiments. Today we would call them townships, and in Burke County we have several. The term regiment is obviously from the military, and on some of the tax lists the areas are divided further from regiments into companies. Perhaps if a war had broken out and a draft was instituted, men drafted from Regiment #3 District would have been put in the 3rd Burke Regiment, but this is just speculation. Probably the easiest way to find out where in Burke your Wilsons lived would be to check land records or see if they received a land grant which can be located on a modern map of the county using our new Deed Mapper Program.
