Hey Charlotte,
Thank you for reponse. I have come to the conclusion that your Ezekiel Birchfield is my GGGGrandfather. The 1900 Mitchell co Census has Samuel Birchfield age54 living with my ggrandfather Alexander and his brothers William Lawson and David Fletcher. The Sam we thought was ours was Reubens son b.1836-37. Thats off by ten years and this is "only Sam that fits". This is how it goes? Welcome any and all corrections and additions. Will be reposting on WorldConnect this week. See that you have different sibling info. Some kinda cousin- Dennis Ingham.

2. Samuel H BIRCHFIELD. Born Circa 1846 in NC.

This Samuel Birchfield is in 1900 Yancey Co NC census at age 54 with David, Alec and Lawson. This is only Sam that fits. If Samuel married Edna Hughes @1875, then Polly and Sams childrens birth dates are wrong. Maybe 1866 and 1867? This would fit with Ednas stepchildren being older than she when she married Sam.
Judith Anns adoption record states, paternal birth gr-grandfather died at 83 from heart trouble and old age.
A Sam Birchfield died in Carter Co TN in 1917-83 is 1834?. or Reubens' Sam?1837+83 - 1920?. or Ezekials' Sam?1846+83- 1929. The article about Hale Hughes and Sam Birchfield killing Powell said Sam was released in 1901 to "Die".?
H. could be Huston or Houston. Tn, Carter Co, marriage 1 Feb 1899 to Eliza Holder.

He first married Mary "Polly" HUGHES, daughter of Charles "Big Charles" HUGHES & Matilda YOUNG. Born About 1843. Died Circa 1868.

Jim Hughes thinks Polly is Mary, born about 1843 d/o Charles and Matilda (Young) Hughes. Next door neighbors per 1850 Yancey Co, NC census, family #809, just up the Rock Creek Rd. Julia Birchfields' mother did die when she was an infant. Descendants calculate her death at @1868.

They had the following children:

       3       i.       Julia Etta BIRCHFIELD
       4       ii.       Nathan BIRCHFIELD
       5       iii.       Matilda (Tilda) BIRCHFIELD

He second married Edna HUGHES, daughter of William HUGHES & Mary HYDER. Born 25 Oct 1861 in Mitchell Co, NC. Died 16 Oct 1927 in Lansing, MI, At David F. Birchfields Home. Buried 18 Oct 1927 in Oakwood Cemetery, Bl-31, Lot-171, Adrian, Lenawee Co, MI. Occupation Wife-Farmer-Housewife.

Edna told Doris and Beatty that their GrGrGrandmother was an "Indian Princess "from Bryan, NC. When she died she lived close to Gorman, on her farm which she worked with Will Garrison. I interviewed Beatty Luce on 21 Aug 2001(with Marjorie Keller) and was told - Edna married Sam when she was 14 (1875). When Alexander "Alec" was 12 (1896) she jumped on a dapple grey horse and rode away from the family at "Roan Mtn". Her mother Mary (Shepherd) had gone to Lenawee Co, MI and Edna left her 3 sons in the care of Pollys (Sams 1st wife) children. When she married Sam, he had children older than her by Polly. Edna wound up in Big Stone Gap, VA., working in the house of the author of "Trail to Lonesome Pine" John Fox Jr.. She made her way to Michigan by 1901 and started her own "truck farm" at Gorman, Treat Highway. When Alec was 18 (1902), he gave his piece of Roan Mtn to a young man for his shotgun. He really was desperate to leave. He then hopped a train to Ogden Center, MI. He walked to his mothers porch of the house she'd built on the Treat Highway and when she answered the door she didn't recognise him.
Doris recalls that Alex went to his mom at Big Stone Gap VA, and they then went on to Adrian. Alec told her that he walked to VA and often didn't know if he was heading in the right direction. He'd given his dog away and the shotgun was gone. He said he was terrified of the wild animals and of the landowners who might object to his crossing their lands. Doris and Beatty did visit the home where Edna worked in Big Stone Gap.
Obit in Adrian Daily Telegram, Oct 20 1927.
Mrs. Edna Birchfield, aged 65 years, passed away Sunday, October 16, at the home of her son D.(avid) F.(letcher) Birchfield, in Lansing, after an illness of one year. Her maiden name was Edna Hughes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hughes.
She was born in Mitchell county, North Carolina, coming to Michigan with her family 26 years ago. Her husband Samuel Birchfield, preceded her in death several years ago.
She is survived by three sons, D.(avid) F.(letcher) Birchfield of Lansing, Alexander Birchfield of Hillsdale and W.(illiam) L.(awson) Birchfield of Roam(n) Mountain, Tenn. 14 grandchildren, three half-brothers, Nelson Hyder of Adrian, John Shepherd of Marysville, Cal., and Synclair Shepherd of Los Angeles, California: one half-sister, Mrs. Pearl Nachtrieb of Yuba, California, and many friends and relatives.
She accepted Christ as her Saviour during her sickness and often expressed herself ready to meet her Saviour, and often asked her friends to meet her in heaven. She bore her sickness with patience to the end.

Medical: Her death certificate states, Myocardial degeneration, Edema of entire body. Had Polio when she was 13. Judith Anns adoption record states, paternal birth gr-grandmother died at age 65 of Asthma and other complications.

Research: Michigan death certificate #133 4888, Register #675. Death notice spelled her half-brothers surname, Shepherd? Informant on her MI death certificate was her son David Birchfield of 1111 No Walnut St. Lansing, MI which is also where she died. He wrote Mary Shepard for her mothers maiden name. Why was she called Birchfield?, She was with Will Garrison for 25+ years?

They had the following children:

       6       i.       David Fletcher BIRCHFIELD
       7       ii.       Alexander Buchanan BIRCHFIELD
       8       iii.       William Lawson BIRCHFIELD

Native American, adopted into Irish family, per Nathan Birchfields ggranddaughter, Deborah Birchfield. Many Nathans in area, Doris Virginia Birchfield had this Nathan married to Vashtie Birchfield. Alexanders mother Edna left Sam Birchfield in Roan Mountain Tennessee in 1896, when Alec was twelve. Beatty recalls Alec saying when he turned 18 that he gave his piece of Roan Mountain to a neighbor for his shotgun. He walked to find his mother. He wanted to get out of the backwards backwoods. He said he was terrified at night of the wild animals and of the property owners that might object to his trespass.. There is confusion as to whether he went directly to VA, or to MI. He related that his mother came to the door and did not recognise him and that he took a train to Odgen Center.
