Gayle,

I've looked under (and posted to) every soundex equivalent name possible for Fair in Burke County for several years and corresponded with numerous contacts offering help to no avail. I'm now working on the theory that perhaps Archibald's father moved from Burke to Cherokee about the time he did in the 1830s. The 1860 Cherokee County index shows a family of Archibel Fair (clearly mine) and an Archibald Farr seemingly in different county census locations (376 vs 435). I will check out that possibility as soon as I can get back out to NARA Southeast here in Atlanta. As for the Macon surname in Burke, I find Mason but not Macon. Cherokee County, NC and adjoining Union County, GA (where my G/GF Charles Fair settled)has lots of the Mason surname. thanks for caring.
