Hi Bill,
I have two books on Death Certificates from Burke Co , NC in the time frame you are looking at.
I found one Charles Lewis who was theinfant son of Harance Lewis and Abbie Burkhart.
He was born 17 May 1917 and dies 26 May 1917. He is buried at the Obeth Church Cemetery, in Gibbs, NC (No longer a town and church has fallled but the centerry is still there with some marked graves.)But this may be a relative.
NC required death certificates after 1913 and they are at the Register of Deeds in Morganton NC, 28655.
I think they still only charge 25 cents with a self stamped envelope.
You may also want to check McDowell Co as it isn't far from Obeth Church.
Good Luck,
Debbie
