Hello Dallas,
Oh my gosh! I was so excited to see your messsage. Sgt John H. Hines of the 16th NC, I am almost positive was my husband's GG Grandfather. I am planning a trip to Raleigh in a few weeks to see if I can prove this is the same John Hines.
You probably have that he was a Pvt in Co E 16th Reg. He enlisted 10 May 1861 at age 23. He was wounded at Fredricksburg on 18 Dec 1862; promoted to Sgt 26 Aug 1863; captured and sent to Elmira, NY where he died on 26 Jan 1865 of pneumonia.
Our John Hines was the son of Jonathan Hines and Sarah Derryberry. He was married to Lin (Louisa) Propes.
In the 1860 census records for Burke he was married with two daughters Sarah Jane; age 4 yr;My husbands G Grandmother...We have her picture on our bedroom wall; and Jo Anna: age 1.
He is not in the 1870 census.
All arrows point to him being our John but I don't have positive ID yet.
Thank you for keeping our heritage alive.

I am really interested in the War Between the States History.
Hope I have been some help.
Keep in touch.

Happy hunting, Debbie
