Denise,

A bastardy bond was a bond that the father of a child born out of wedlock was suppose to take out in order to prove that he would provide financial support for the child. Basically, the mother of the child, in this case, Susannah GURLEY had to appear in court and name the father of her child. Sometimes, however, one of the mother's family members would sign the bond rather than the father, so if the surnames are the same don't assume that something "corky" was going on in the family. I'll check on Monday, at the library to see if I can find the Burke County bastardy bonds. If not you'll have to contact the NC State Archives. They have a website.

Jackie
