The 1800 census is the earliest for Buncombe County. The first Reeves to appear was James Reeves (b. < 1765)on the 1810 census.

p. 82 James Reeves       11001       23000

On the 1820 census, a Malachi Reeves (b. 1775-1794) appears, living next to James. He is thought to be James' son. Later census and other sources indicate that Malachi was born about 1790-1792.

p. 72       James Reaves       200101 02010
p. 72       Malachi Reaves       200010       20100

Perhaps the Malachi you are looking for was a brother of James Reeves who either died or moved before being enumerated in the 1800 or 1810 census.

Be happy to share the information I have on the Reeves of Buncombe & Haywood Counties.

Mary Ellen
