Carter Family 1860 Brunswick co census

In the 1860 census of North West Township, Brunswick County appears one William Carter, wife Harriett and couple of children. I believe this to be the family of my grandmother Sarah Jane Carter Reynolds though she isnt shown in the census. As she was born in Dec 1860 she would have been too late to be in that census. My problem: I can not find this family again in later censuses! I find Sarah Jane after she is married to John Reynolds. What happened to this Carter family and was it really my ancestral family??????
