I'm going to give you what info I have from the library here in Wilmington.
Conferate Soldiers
1861-1865 VOL.III
Chinnis, Samuel R. Ist. Lt.-51st Inf. Co. G.

Figuring that he was in the service during this time I would find him in a census prior to the 1861 date.
So the 1850 census states:
Michael Chinis 51
Rebecca 37
Mary 16
Michael 6
ROBERT 1
Warren 3 1/2

Benjamin Chinis 52
Florah 33
Hamilton 13
Mary 12
John 8
Daniel 3
Julia 1/10

Daniel 40
Anna 50
Susan 42
William 15

I do believe that you Samuel Robert was the son of Michael. Michael was the son of Benjamin Chinnis Sr.
