Family Roots in Bladen County: The Camerons

Hello.

I've discovered that my g/g/g/great-grandfather was a Scottish immigrant who sailed from Scotland in August, 1774, aboard the ship Ulysses. His name was Allen Cameron (one of his brothers, Angus, and Angus' wife were with him) and they landed in the Wilmington/Cape Fear area and he settled in Bladen County and raised his family there.

The more I learn about this man, the more I would love to know. I don't know anything whatsoever about Bladen County, but I would love to visit soon and walk the land my grandfather called home.

There is a very touching story about Allen which tells of the death of his young daughter. It seems that Allen couldn't bear the thoughts of burying her in a flood-prone area, so he and one of his sons carried her little body by horseback to higher ground. Somewhere in my records I have the name of the cemetery. I do know that some of this family settled in places called Barbeque Township, Cameron Hill, Moore, Harnett, and Cumberland. Allen died in a place called Baker's Creek in 1800.

If any of you has any information whatsoever on this family, I would love to hear from you! And this may sound a little silly, but does anyone have any idea if it would be possible to find where his home was located? Does Baker's Creek still exist?

Thanks!
Ruth Cameron
