Since posting that info I have learned there were two Stephen Smiths. One was the one married Joanna Council.
The other one was born about 1742, died during service on 3 June 1783. His son, Stephen Cullen Smith is the one who applied for a land grant and received one for 640 acres in Davidson Co. TN. He appears to have assigned it to a John Nichols. These Stephen Smiths appear to be those of Hyde County, NC. The one who died in service appears to have married Ann Flinn(Flynn) 10 Aug 1763 per Hyde Co. NC marriage bond.
