Am seeking to identify the surname of the wife (Margaret, MNU) of Randal Ronald Shaw (1802-1868). They appear to have been married ca 1830 as the 1850 US Census for Bladen Co NC lists the age of their first child as 19. Randal is listed as Randal in the 1850 Census and as Randolph in the 1860 Census. He and Margaret and their children (and about ten slaves) are listed in 1850 and again in 1860. One of their sons was named Bennett Shaw and was born ca 1840. He joined the CSA in May of 1862 at the age of 22 and was commended for "distinguished service."
One of my good African American friends from Liberty County, GA, is the great grandson of yet another Bennett Shaw, born ca 1867 in nearby Columbus County, NC. This latter Bennet SHAW was the son of Nathan SHAW (b ca 1820 in NC) and his wife Esther (b ca 1824 in NC). The family of Nathan and Esther SHAW is enumerated in the 1880 NC Census but I cannot find them at any earlier date, nor in the NC Freedmen's Bank records. It occurs to me that this African American family from adjacent Columbus County NC may have taken its family surname from an association with one of the Shaw families of Bladen County NC, descended from Angus Shaw of Scotland (b 1690), through his son Daniel Shaw (1722-1799), through his son Daniel Shaw (1765-1848), through his son Randal Shaw (1802-1868), and perhaps from his son Bennett Shaw (b ca 1840 and d. ?). The given name of Bennett is a minor red thread which runs through this Shaw family, and I would appreciate it if you could help me flesh out some of the details of the families of Randal and Margaret Shaw, and of their son Bennett.
