We have started a Lucas surname DNA project with Family Tree DNA.
Their web site is:

At present Family Tree DNA has several DNA samples from Lucas members across the USA.

I have contributed a sample-I descend from John Lucas of Wayne County, NC.

Cousin Steven has contributed a sample he descends from Lewis Lucas of Sampson County, NC. Cousin Steven has found several exact matches with other Lucas cousins- from California and Washington State.

The cousins from WA and CA are members of the Silas Emmett Lucas family who descended from Charles Daniel Lucas. This Lucas family was from Kentucky-North Carolina-South Carolina.

From these results we know that Lewis Lucas of Sampson County is related to the Charles Daniel Lucas and the Silas Emmett Lucas family.

My DNA closely matches the above DNA samples-although it is not a perfect match but very close.

The DNA signature is very unique-ie it is not most other family DNA's/

As an example you can see two family names with published DNA results at:

Baker family:

Bolling family:

A review of the two above families will give you an idea of how the DNA samples are compared.

It would appear that the Lewis Lucas family, and the Charles Daniel Lucas family (Silas Emmett Lucas) family are closely related and are one and the same.

It would appear the John Lucas family is also related-but more results are needed.

If we can further identify this relationship we may learn more about the ancestry of these Lucases.

Our Lucas family seems to have first started in northern Europe-
in present day northern Poland and spread to England-Spain- and western Germany and Italy.

We need more male Lucas members to give DNA samples.

It consists of a simple throat swab. Only 12 markers are obtained from the sample.

This is not like the DNA in the O J Simpson case so there is no legal pattern identified.

If you are interested please let me know.

Charles Lucas MD
