First Doughton on New River

I could use some help regarding the first men in the New River area with the surname Doughton - from Alleghany Co NC where Joseph Doughton was up to Wytheville, VA where there was a Jeremiah Doulten in 1768 that may have been a Doughton. Also there was a Daniel Doty/Doughty who lived on Elk Creek in what is now Alleghany County in 1778 just West of Doughton Mountain that perhaps could have been a Doughton. Has it ever been determined just how early the Doughton were on the New River and if there were brothers are just one family that came in? Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks Joe Doughty , Arkansas
