The Mysterious Disappearance of Rebecca Hall

Rebecca Larue, Riley Hall, Rebecca Hall, Jane Moxley, Phebe Moxley, Lena Hall, Mattie Hall, Virginia, West Virginia, Alleghany County North Carolina

Riley Hall and Rebecca Larue gave birth to Lena Hall in 1902 and Mattie Hall about 1904.
Lena told the story that late one night, her father loaded her and her sister Mattie onto a buckboard along with possessions and moved to North Carolina. Neither girl remembered having seen their mother that day, or ever again, nor of their father ever speaking of her. They remained fearful to ask of her, throughout their father's life and only spoke of it whispered among close family even afterwards.
Riley appears in the Alleghany, N.C. census of 1910 with Jane Moxley and an 8 year old Lena and a 6 year old Mattie. Riley is shown as being 36 years old at the time, making his birth year about 1873. Jane is shown as being 49 years old, making her approximate birth year 1860. Phebe Moxley appears as 84 years old (born abt.1825) and is stated expressly to be "mother-in-law". The census records show Riley, Lena, and Mattie as born in Virginia, and Jane and Phebe as born in North Carolina. Lena was indeed born 7-5-1902. Records show her birthplace as Virginia although she insisted on having been born in West Virginia. I have thus far been unable to obtain any official records of Riley or Rebecca Hall other than this 1910 census. Birth years given, other than that of Lena, are based entirely on the census records and assumed correct for estimation, and based on census being actually taken in 1909.

Lena was my paternal grandmother who died on 5-4-1994. Mattie, likewise has passed on.
Riley was also known as Wiley and possibly William Riley Hall. The girls were taught to call Jane "Mother" early on and Lena spoke of her as gentle, loving, and kind. Never did I hear, or hear of my grandmother speaking ill of their stepmother, and apparently her love was reciprocated.
