Austin Family

Kathryn, I believe Robert Austin is Calvins uncle.

Per info from an Austin Family researcher, Bartholomew Austin, b. ca 1768, married Anne J. Reeves, b. 12-Jan-1775. They had thirteen children. Two of these were Jane Austin, b. 20-Sep-1795, and Robert Austin, b. 10-Nov-1811.

Jane Austin married Henry Vanover. On the 1850 census of Ashe Co., NC (this is in an area that became Alleghany Co. in 1859), there is listed in household #8, Henry Vanover, 57, Baptist Clergyman, Jane Vanover, 53, Nancy Austin, 18, Calvin Austin, 20, and Polly Austin, 25. I believe this Calvin is probably the one you are researching.

As for Robert, he and his family are listed on the 1850 census of Pike Co., KY. Robert is a Baptist Minister. In 1860 they are listed on the Floyd Co., KY, census. This is census on which Calvin and his family are listed -- same household.

The 1870 and 1880 census records show Calvin and Tincey living in Prathers Creek Twp. of Alleghany Co., NC. Evidently Calvin died sometime between 1880 and 1900 because the 1900 census of Piney Creek Twp., Alleghany Co., NC, lists in household # 222, Fields J. McMillan, 74, widower, and Tiney (sic) Austin, 65, servant, widow, b. Feb. 1835. Census shows she has had 9 children and 5 are still living.

Per record of Alleghany County Cemeteries compiled in 1986: Tincy E. Austin, b. 24-Dec-1835, d. 01-Nov-1910, buried in F. J. McMillan Cemetery.

I have looked at images of original census records but have not verified other info. Hopefully this will give you something to work with. Good luck in your research.
