Does anyone know what happened to the family of Jefferson Johnston? They are shown on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses, but all traces of this family seem to disappear in 1900 and thereafter.
I have attempted to construct this family as follows. I could not extract any North Carolina marriages for Alamance County on the statewide database for the periods I needed.
Jefferson JOHNSON or Jefferson JOHNSON was born about 1832. He was listed on the 1850 Census at age 18, in Chatham County, NC. He was listed on the 1860 Census at age 24, also in Chatham County, NC. He was listed on the 1870 Census at age 41 in Alamance County, NC. He is not listed with his family in 1880, however, his wife Elizabeth is listed at age 45, also in Alamance County. Although his 2nd oldest daughter Sarah is listed in 1880, his three oldest children, William, Martha, and James have all left home and are still to be found elsewhere...please help!
Jefferson's mother was named Penina or Pennine. She may possibly be a WALL or WALLS but this is not proved. She was born about 1794 in North Carolina and her father was born in Virginia and mother born NC.
Jefferson's wife was named Elizabeth and she was born about 1840.
Jefferson and Elizabeth married about 1856. I do not have a record of their marriage because Alamance County marriages are not listed in the statewide index for North CArolina Marriages. If somebody has the Alamance County index to marriages, please point me in that direction - THANKS.
