The following is a reprise of a newspaper article which mentions families who moved from Alamance Co. to the area around Excelsior Springs, Clay Co., MO before the Civil War.
I have been attempting to find information on the family of David McClure without much success so far but thought I would share this in case it might be of help to someone else. If you would like a copy of the page, please contact me.
Oct 1978 unidentified newspaper articlefrom Clay Co. MO with photograph of Salem Christian Church and cemetery; “Community history reflected in church. “ Dedicated in June of this year as a Clay County Historical Site, Salem Christian Church stands as a memorial to the area’s early settlers. // Moving from near the present city of Winston-Salem in Alamance County, N. C., several families among them the Greaons, Walkers, Albrights, McClures, Holmans, Faucetts, Millers and Hausers—had settled in ray and Clay Counties of Missouri, near the present site of Excelsior Springs. // They erected a church building in 1840, calling it the New Light Christian Church. Land on which the building stood was deeded later to the church by Frederick Miller, who owned more than 1,600 acres, purchased at a price of $1.25 per acre. // In 1858, the Rev. D. H. McClure established the Salem Christian Church in the old New Light church building. // It was among the main worship places of the area until 1881, when another Christian Union Church was built in the developing town of Excelsior Springs. // The first church building stood until 1906, when it was replaced by the present structure. For about 50 years beginning in 1920, Salem Christian Church was closed, except for special services. Then in July 1970, the church was re-opened for regular services by earl V. Mitchell, a lay minister. // Mr. Mitchell’s grandfather, the late Rev. G. W. Mitchell, is among the eight ministers buried in the Salem Church cemetery. He was married by the Rev. D. H. McClure, who had established Salem Christian Union Church. // The church building has been restored. Attendance at Sunday services averages about 35 persons. Mr. Mitchell, now 77, continues as pastor. [by Cathleen Pfeiffer McMullan
