I could be totally wrong, but the unspoken piece of the puzzle is this: Anthony of Bourbon, who was either the duke or count of Vendome, became King of Navarre in 1554 after marrying Jane D'Albret in 1548. THEIR son, Henry the 3rd of Navarre, later became Henry the 4th of France. But, Anthony also had an illegitimate son by another woman. It is this son John Navarre who married Perette Barat in 1572. After all, who likes to claim descent from a b------?
