Dr. Michael A. "Mike" Naughton

NAUGHTON, DR. MICHAEL A. "MIKE"

-Died peacefully 18th April, at University of Colorado Medical Center, surrounded by his family, of complications from Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS).

-Survived by his wife Carolyn, daughters Kate and Siobhan, and son Stuart. Also by his step children, Bart, Sheryl, Shawn and Kurt, and his grandsons Tyler and Connor.

-Memorial Service to be held at All Saints Lutheran Church, 15625 East Iliff Ave, Aurora, 24th April at 3 p.m. (Opposite the Sheebeen Pub).

-Mike was born 23 June 1926 in Crewe, England and grew up in Innischrone, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Returning to England to complete his education, he joined the RAF in 1944. In 1948 he went to St. Andrews University, Scotland, receiving his B. Sc. in biochemistry in 1952. From there he went on to be the first assistant to double Nobel Prize winner, Sir Frederick Sanger at the University of Cambridge. In 1959 he received his Doctorate from Kings College, Cambridge. From 1959 till 1962 he was a Research Associate at MIT, Massachusetts and from there to be Associate Professor in Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. In 1967 he moved to Australia to take up the post of Senior Principal Research Scientist in Animal Genetics with the CSRIO, Sydney. He came to Denver in 1970 where he was Professor of Biophysics, Genetics and Ob-Gyn at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Retiring in 1985 he moved to Kinsale Co., Cork, Ireland before returning to Denver in 2001 to marry Carolyn.

-Perhaps his greatest legacy was his work in abnormal haemoglobins, leading to, among other things, the test for sickle-cell anemia. He left his body to Medical Science.
