Hello Stephen

I am currently compiling my family tree and have traced my wife's (Moira Nattrass) side back to a John Nattrass who is listed in the 1881 census as being born (obviously around 1831) in Northallerton, Yorkshire. At the time of the Census he was living in Durham (10 Russell Place, Willington) with his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown), sons Jonathan (19), John (16), Francis (14) and daughter Mary Annie (12). All the children were born in Durham. 1st son Jonathan married Margaret Reed on 30/12/1885 and together had 2 sons, Francis Reed Nattrass and Albert. Francis Reed was my wife's grandfather. Due to the Northallerton/Durham connection, this may be of some use. It is a bit of a long shot really as there must have been many families that moved north during this period to find work in the coalfields.
