Judy,
I have two relatives who emigrated to the US around 1848: Georg Natt and Christian Natt, we know that there were descendants and that the families kept in contact for some time. They were raised on a farm in Hesse, central Germany. You need more detailed information, although Nath or Natt is not a common German surname, there are families of that name in various German locations. It is also a Swedish surname. The Natts I'm descended from were always Lutheran.
