Was he free prior to 1850? Charles Napper was freed in 1782 in Campbell county. He had eight other people living with him. It is possible some of his ancestors may have moved to west va. There were Nappers is Pittsylvania county. You may find a connection there.

I looked at all of the Nappers accross the united states born before 1817, born in Va and those who moved to other states that and tried to match them to a slave owner. I doon't remember finding a David Napper, but I will look again. I was only able to find the original slave owner of my family - William Napier - Caroline County Va. E-mail me at napperw@bellsouth.net and I will send you that analysis. It may help you.
