There were Germans who fought with and against Napoleon. If you are interested, ask your librarian for a basic history of the Napoleonic wars. Remember a couple of things -

1) "German" meant the language they spoke; there were a lot of small nations, not one big one like today.

2) Loyalties shifted back and forth.
