Military Base Newtown Wales Area c.1802

Hello,

Does anyone know of a military base / installation in the Newtown area c.1800 ?

I'm trying to figure out why a Royal Marine from Manchester, Lancs (probably stationed in Chatham, Kent) married a woman from Machynlleth, Montgomery (actually from just across the river in Pennal, Merioneth) in Newtown, Montgomery in 1801.

Thanks,
David Knowles
