Thanks for your response. I will try to go through the LDS route to see if they have any records. I don't think this ancestor had pleasant memories of his military career. He left Germany in 1834 with his family. His son, who would have been of military age during the US civil war, moved back and forth across the Niagara River during that period such that half of my grandfather's siblings were born just across the border in Canada.

I was hoping to find a group of people whose ancestors might have served with Napoleon, something like our DAR or Sons of the Confededacy.
