1591 Gunner Absolom Greening:
Born Parish of Winchcombe, Cheltenham, Gloucester[shire].
At age 18 he enlisted as a gunner & Driver into the Royal Artillery at Ross [on-Wye], Hereford[shire] 19 March 1853.
He was discharged from his 1st limited service engagement at Dorchester 20 Mar 1865; at discharge he had accrued 12yrs pensionable service and earned 2 good contact badges. During the term he had served with the 9 battery [? Brigade] and 14th Brigade Royal Garrison & Field Artillery and A & B Brigades, Royal Horse Artillery; no batteries were mentioned and none of the service was overseas.
8 days later, 28 Mar 1865, he re-engaged for a further term of 9yrs and was discharged from Camden Fort Cork Harbour 7th May 1874 having served a further 9yrs 41days, giving his pensionable service as 21yrs 43days [increased to 21yrs 69days by his final discharge] and he earned a further 3 good conduct badges. During his 2nd term he served with the 7th & 22nd Brigades Royal Garrison & Field Artillery; no service was overseas.
His character was described as “very good” never having had his name entered in the Regimental defaulters’ book and never having been tried by Court Martial. For conduct, he was in possession of 5 good conduct badges and a medal for “good conduct and long service with five pounds gratuity.
At final discharge from the service, after completing administrations at Dublin 2 June 1874, he was described as being age 39ys 1 month, height 5 ft 9˝ in, fresh complexion, eyes grey, hair light brown, no marks or scars. His trade was Labourer.
Intended place of residence Cheltenham.
In the 1881 census he’s living with his Wife and 3 children at 120, Gt Brook St, Aston, Warwickshire.
Absolom died in 1883 age 49, the GRO reference of his death is:
