Chelsea Pensioners
Hi all
I am posting the details I have of these men who I have found in my family tree and there is some mention in the documents I have of their involvement in the army. I am hoping someone here can give me some more information on them.
1. George Clelland (or Cleland)
born 19 Sep 1791 St. Cuthberts Edinburgh- OPR
He was noted as an Army Pensioner on his daughter's death form
He must have died before the 1841 census as his wife is listed as Widow Clelland and no note of him
I searched the NA records and found a possible match- WO 97/840 72nd Foot has a George Cleland
born Edinburgh Served in 72nd Foot Regiment Discharged aged 37 so if his birth is right then that would be 1828?
Asked for quote and they wanted 60 pounds - too dear!!
Any suggestions or knowledge appreciated?
2 Peter McIntosh
born abt 1802 Glasgow (from 2 census) cant find birth
1861 census noted as Artillery Chelsea Pensioner (Shoemaker)
1871 census Bootmaker (Chelsea Pensioner)
died 13 Aug 1877
Was noted as "James" on his son's (Peter too) death form?
(Also his Grandson (Peter as well) was killed in WW1-I have his details)
Can't find anything on him, any suggestions?
3 Matthew Andrew or Andrews
Birth 25 Nov 1786 in Mearns Ayrshire Scotland (OPR)- found as the only match in Scotlands People from a National Archives record (WO 97/219) which has him - Served in 1st Foot Regiment and Discharged aged 37 so it matches. Also from Find My Past I have a Peninsula Medal Roll 1793-1814 which lists a Matthew Andrews 1st Foot receiving 4 clasps.
Married Margaret Mckay on 16 May 1821 at Aberdeen (not sure if right one but can find no other that matches names)
Noted as Private Soldier on daughters death form (and deceased) (she was born 1827 and died 1899)
4. James Campbell
The only thing I have on him is on his daughter's marriage in 1876 which notes him as a Pensioner Private 26th Foot
any more information on them or regiment or medals they got would be appreciated. I have tried other forums but have had no replies.
thanks for your time
regards
Robert
