military records

I recently discovered that my g-g-grandfather Jacob Recktenwald from the Saarland served with Napoleon I in Russia. I am interested in finding records of his service, possible awards/decorations, veteran's groups of the period, unit rosters and histories, etc., but am at a loss as to how to start. Any suggestions?
