Napier Field, Named for Maj. Edward L. Napier, born Union Springs, AL
I have a copy of the "Booster, AAFAFS, Napier Field, AL," dated 1 Nov 1942.On page 2, is a pen and ink sketch of Major Edward L. Napier, and the following short bio:
"Major Napier - Organization day looks back to the opening of the field, and no backward glance would be complete without a slight nod to the man for whom the field was named.
Napier Field was named in honor of Major Edward L. Napier, a native of Union Springs, Alabama, who was killed in the crash of an army plane at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, on September 15, 1923.
The Major had been a Medical Corps Officer in the first world war and had transferred to the Air Corps. He was receiving training as a flight surgeon at the time of his death. The official report states that he was piloting the plane himself and there was a structural failure of a wing."
If there are any descendants of Major Napier who would like a copy of the sketch, I can scan and Email it to you.My Email address is [email protected]
