This may be a long shot... My father is Joel Harold Nance, his father and supposedly grandfather as well, were named Harold Nance. The first Harold Nance shows up in Iowa, late 1800s and joins the merchant marines. By family lore Harold was the descendant of escaped slaves who had fled to the Allegheny reservation in upstate NY. Around 1906 he re-joined the merchant marines and disappeared. There are probably only two possible leads to this history for me: One would be slave records (unfortunately these oftentimes do not list names,) these records would probably emanate from well before the Civil War seeing as my great-grandfather was recorded in Iowa in, i believe, the 1870s or 80s. The other source of records might link to any other Nances' of Afrikan descent, and the possibility they also emanated from the reservation. If anyone has any information or resources that might be helpful, I would greatly appreciate any help, i have been looking for a while but recently decided to step up my efforts. Many thanks, Ezekiel Handsome-Lake Nance. Notify Administrator about this message?
