Clement Nance, b. 1816 TN, of Fayette Co. TN and Sharp Co. AR
I am interested in the origins of a Clement Nance who was born January 1816 in Tennessee.Between 1855 and 1860, he married widow Matilda Clementine (Smith) Turner probably in Fayette Co., TN, where she lived and there they both appear on the 1860 census. They received BLM land in Sharp Co., AR in 1860 and moved there soon afterward, where they appear in 1870 with two sons, James A. (b. ca. 1862, AR) and William C. (b. ca. 1863, AR).Matilda had two sons by her previous husband, Joseph Turner:Thomas Joseph Turner and George Turner. By 1870 George Turner cannot be found and is presumed dead, and Thomas Joseph has married in Sharp Co. and lives nearby.Clement Nance died in September 1870 and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Sharp Co., AR.On the 1880 census, Matilda is again a widow, living with son James but the second son, William, is not found and presumed dead.Matilda Nance married a third time in 1883 to David Drury Spurlock, and is buried near him (and Clement) in Shiloh Cemetery, having died in 1892.Beyond the 1880 census, there is no trace of James A. Nance.I am a descendent of Matilda (who must have been interesting -- she was a successful and well-known businesswoman in Sharp Co., as well as attracting a string of husbands), not a descendent of Clement, but I'd like to know where he came from and also what happened to James A. Nance.Any help would be appreciated. To find the details of this lineage (all the information I have), check my site at RootsWeb titled "The Forefolk of Meg Barnett".
