I do have some records on this Caleb Howell. This is what I have:

Caleb Howell was in St. Matthew's Parish GA as early as 1762, when he got a Crown Grant of 200 acres. Later, this area fell into Effingham Co GA. He is apparently the same Caleb Howell who served as a justice of the peace in Bladen Co NC in 1757 and had land grants there as early as 1745. He apparently lived in the area of Bladen that became Anson Co, as there are also records for him in that county.
Effingham Co GA records show that Caleb Howell d. 1792, leaving wife Ann and son Caleb Jr. The book "Some Colonial & Revolutionary Families of NC, Volume III" states that Caleb Howell came from Beaufort Co NC and went to GA to escape debts. His son Caleb Jr. later lived in Screven Co GA.
There is nothing in my records to give the maiden name of Caleb's wife, but I doubt that she was any connection to the Nails of Edgefield Co SC. That family is pretty well documented at least after the first generation. The only other Ann Nail I have run across is known to have married a Zubly.
On the other hand, abstracts of Edgefield Co records show Philip and Sarah Howell of Screven Co GA mentioned in connection with the David Mock estate in 1805. There is no mention here of Caleb Howell.
I suspect someone has gotten Caleb confused with Nathaniel Howell.
