  of 68

Below is a few generations of my Mylers. I have kept out the living, and posted a lot of different information here, gathered from many different sources. The nearest to me in blood is the best documented. Much has been gathered from taking oral histories, letters, phone conversations, email, etc.etc.

At the bottom of this is an INDEX OF MYLERS ONLY!!!!!! You should print this out; it will be approximately 12-13 pages. I'll be happy to answer any questions that I can.

good luck to you all!

1.1.1 John Milton MYLER
Birth:       18 Jun 1846, Ross Co., OH
Death:       27 Mar 1900, Ogden, Illinois
Burial:       Bodkin Yard, Ogden, Ill
Occ:       farmer

1880 Ogden census shows John's household with the following people in it: John Myles (note spelling of last name); married, age 33, farmer, born in Ohio; both parents born in PA - Cornelia, age 23, wife, born IN; children are James, age 10, born IL; Charlie, age 7, born IL; Etta, age 3, born IL; Henry, male, age 30, listed as a cousin, born in Denmark, parents born in Ohio and Indiana; Lonzo, age 20, born OH as his parents were. Lonzo was actually Alonzo Myler.
John Myler - Champaign Co. Estate 2515 consists of SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 20, Twp 19, Range 14, containing about 40 acres. Title fee simple believed to be perfect.

1893 Plat Book from the Urbana, ILL Library shows that John owned land in Section 21 South of Ogden Ill. It used to be called North Homer Township. The spelling on the land deed is MILOR, from the Every Name Card File at the Urbana Library. His obituary follows:

This company was startled this morning when it became known that John Myler, living 1 1/4 miles south of town, had been found dead about 6:30 by John Alsip and Will Nonnemacher. The deceased had been in apparently good health and was on his way to haul corn for S. W. Perkins. He had covered about three-fourths of the distance, when he was compelled to dismount and lead his team through a gate on the east side of Mr. Perkin's farm. He turned to close it, as is supposed, and fell dead, heart disease being the probably cause. He was lying behind the wagon, out of reach of the horses and there was no marks upon his person to indicate any other means of death. Messrs. Alsip and Nonnemacher were following Mr. Myler and they soon reached the spot where he was lying. Assistance was summoned and the body of the unfortunate man was taken to the home of his son, where an inquest is being held this afternoon by Coronor Penny. At this time, no funeral arrangements have been made."

John's mother-in-law was Melissa Perkins - I wonder if this Mr. S.W. Perkins could have been a relative of hers?

Another newspaper account of the funeral follows here.
" The funeral of the late John M. Myler, whose sudden death appeared in Wednesday's News, was held from his home Thursday at 1:30 under the auspices of the Knights of Pytias, services being conducted by the life long friend of the family, Rev. Martin of Danville. The remains were interred at Bodkin cemetery, the K. of P. ritual being used. The deceased was born June 18, 1846 in Ross County, O. He came to Illinois in 1865 and united in marriage July 5, 1866 to Miss Amelia Harmeson. Of this union, three sons and two daughters were born, all of whom are living except the youngest daughter. Mr. Myler united with the New Light Church in 1884 and led an exemplary life. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful."

--Notice the spelling of his wife's name in the above. It was not Amelia, but Cornelia. The youngest daughter mentioned was Melissa.

In the 1900 census of Champaign Co, IL there is a listing for Charles M. Myler, born Aug. 1872, age 27 years, and married for 7 years, born in Ohio; lists parents as being born in Ohio and Indiana. Lists wife Aristona born Sept. 1875, age 24; lists John E. as brother, born Feb. 1888, at age 12; lists mother Cornelia, born November 1852, age 47, a widow (she died a few months after this census was taken); and Florence Firebaugh, a sister in law, age 17, birth of Nov. 1882.
So Charles and Aristona did not have their son Ralph by this time. -------

Charles' Obituary ran in the Minot Daily News. It is as follows:
"CHARLES MILTON MYLER, 77 of Minot, who had farmed 40 years near Douglas before moving to Minot 5 years ago, died at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday in a hospital where he had been a patient for three days. He had been ill since last March.
Services will be held at 3:30 pm Thursday at Douglas. Mr. Myler was born at Ogden, ILL on April 20, 1872. Survivors are his wife, Minnie, five children, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. The children are Carol, Mary Ellen, Donna, Doris, and Ruth delaine. Edward Myler of Ray, ND and Jim Myler, living in ILL are the brothers. "
At the time of the obituary, the relatives believed that James Thomas Myler, who they thought of as Uncle Jim, was still livng in ILL. Also, notice that the other brother is called ED here. John Edward Myler, youngest son of John Milton Myler, went by Ed all of his life.

Notes on Etta are scarce. It seems she divorced Jessie when her children were quite young. She then married again, a man by the name of Hornaday. No children were born of this second marriage. Her daughter, Jenny Poague Hammel, found Etta sitting in the rocking chair at her home, where she had passed away. Her first husband, Jessie Poague, remarried several time.

Death:       8 Apr 1898
Burial:       Bodkin Yard, Ogden, Ill

My son, Jim, and I visited the cemetery in 1993. We found the stone of Melissa face down in the cemetery; it had been like that for some time. The gravestone for Melissa was purchased from Clark Monument C. by John Myler, only two years before his own death, and that of his wife.

1.1.2 James Canaday MYLER

I need to check Jame's birthdate and census records for him, if able. He may have been born in 1826 or 1836. If 1836, he was 13 in the 1850 census which is accurate. There is no mention of him moving to ILL with the rest of the family. Believe he may have stayed and/or moved on somewhere else.

William Milton Myler, age 77, a Carroll Co. resident, passed away at his home in Carrollton Saturday at 5 o'clock. He had been in failing health for some time. Birth:       1824, Chillicothe, Ross Co. OH

Robert purchased land from James and Mary Robinson for $1,000 on Sept. 6, 1853. James was the guardian of Robert's brother's sister-in-law, Nancy McClelland. This was land originally owned by Hugh McClelland, SR.
Robert moved to the Sidell, Champaign Co, area of ILL in 1861 or 1862, before his older brother William.

Spouse:       Martha BEAN
Marr:       1853, Ross Co., OH

       William Henry (1857-)

1.2.1 James Louis ("Louis") MYLER
Birth:       1850, Chillicothe, Ross Co. OH
Death:       1929, Kankakee Hospital, Kankakee, ILL

There is some question as to whether or not Martha Bean was his mother. The marriage date of Robert and Martha was very hard to read; could have been either 1853 or 1858. James moved from Ohio to Illinois in 1878, approximately 17 years after his father, Robert. He apparently was not raised with the rest of the family. At this time, this is one big mess and anybody's guess.

However, if James was born in 1850, and records indicate it was so, then Martha Bean was NOT his mother. There is a record of a Robert Myler marrying Martha Ann McClelland in Ross Co., OH on May 31, 1846. He was certainly in the area of the time, and Ann McClelland's daughter was Martha , the granddaughter of Hugh McClelland, who was the father-in-law of Robert's brother, William. In 1843, When Hugh's will was probated, it specified that Martha was to be given some money six years from now, or in 1849.

It seems kind of strange that Robert would marry his brother's niece, but Robert was a full 15 years younger than his brother William. At this time, this seems to make a lot of sense to me. James could be the son of Robert Myler and Martha McClelland, a granddaughter of Hugh McClelland. The brothers married niece and aunt! However, until I know for sure, I will leave it as is.

Birth:       3 Aug 1879, Sidell, Champaign Co., IL
Death:       24 Dec 1946, Sidell, Champaign Co., IL
Burial:       Fairview Cemetery, Sidell, IL

Henry Alva worked at Dilman's Shoe Shop, then at Bancroft Bakery in Sidell, ILL. He then became a farmer.
His tombstone states he was was born on Aug. 3, but the obit states he was born on Aug. 14th. Perhaps I copied it wrong.
Henry's obituary states that he was found dead at home by a neighbor, due to cardiac arrest. Mr. Redman found him. His daughter, Irene, later married a Redman.

Earl Omar "Pete" (1915-) James Albert MYLER
Birth:       4 May 1881, IN

       Thelma L. (1907-) Emil MYLER
Birth:       1884 Charles Ora MYLER
Birth:       1877

The LDS site has him born in 1873 in Iowa, but believe this to be wrong. I spoke with his daughter in law, Lois, who told me that he had lived in Royal, Iowa for a while and made his living as a horse trader.

According to an email from a great-nephew, they also lived in Spencer, Iowa for a while.

Spouse:       Clara ANDERSON GOYETTE

Cora is listed as a survivor in the obituaries of her brothers, James Albert, who died in 1944 and Henry Alva, who died in 1946. She is believed to have had 3 daughters. According to her niece, Joan, one of the daughters, named Margaret, was very close to Joan's own brother, Phillip, who is also deceased.

Birth:       5 Aug 1903, ILl

Raymond made his home in Kokomo and South Bend, IN and hauled new cars on one of those big trucks for a living. His nickname was Joey, although his daughter Joan does not remember it. This must have been while he was a young man. His grandson, Joseph Myler, remembers him as a bald, mild natured man. Raymond died of cancer.

1.2.2 William Henry MYLER
Birth:       1857, OH

William had at least ten known children, but I know nothing of their descendents. At least four of the the ten were sons, so here are more unaccounted for Mylers.

In the 1880 census, William Henry's brother is living with his first cousin, John Milton Myler. His brother was Alonzo. This census lists John Milton as the head of the family, Alonzo is there as a cousin, and there is another cousin listed: named HENRY. But this census gives Henry as being age 30 (This William would have only been 23). It also gives the birthplace of the Henry in the census as Denmark; our William Henry was born in Ohio.

1.2.3 Alonzo Canada MYLER
Birth:       1860, Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH

Alonzo was listed as living with his first cousin John Milton Myler in Ogden Twp. in the 1880 Champaign Co. Census of IL.

Spouse:       Lucinda HESS
Birth:       1862, ILl
Marr:       15 Feb 1883, IL

       Harold A. (1903-)
       Floyd Milton (1908-ca1990) Addie MYLER
Death:       bef 1961

The marriage came from an application of marriage from the Urbana Library. There are no dates for reference on it. I have Addie dying before 1961, as she is listed in her brother Alonzo's obituary as having predeceased him. She is not listed by name; just "a sister", but it is the only sister Alonzo had that I am aware of.

Spouse:       John WYATT
Birth:       IN Roy Allen MYLER
Birth:       21 Mar 1891
Death:       28 Jan 1962
Burial:       Greenwood Cemetery, Danville, IL

Roy's obituary: He was the son of Alonzo and Lucinda Hess Myler; he is survived by wife Nora, and brothers Floyd, Harold, and Lester."

Spouse:       Nora DICKSON
Birth:       ca 1884
Death:       29 Sep 1965, Shelbyville, IN Alonzo Canada MYLER
Birth:       1 Mar 1893, ILl
Death:       18 Jan 1961
Burial:       Greenwood Cemetery, Danville, IL

The obituary records of the Urbana Library state that Alonzo Canada was the son of the above parents, but these same records list Lester, Roy, Harold, and Floyd as his sons. Because of the birth dates of these four men, I believe they were his brothers, not his sons. He could not have fathered a child 2 years before he was born. The obituary records also state that he had one sister who preceded him in death - probably Addie. So we have a death date (about) for Addie.

Children:       Allen Lester C. MYLER
Death:       aft 1962

The Urbana Library lists him as a survivor in his brother Ray's obituary. Harold A. MYLER
Birth:       1903

Harold worked for the Central Illinois Railroad. The family believes that Harold is dead, but was alive in 1990. He was listed as being a survivor to his wife, who died in 1990.

Spouse:       Muriel E. RICKETTS
Birth:       16 Dec 1903, Warren Co., IN
Death:       13 Oct 1990, Danville, ILL
Marr:       26 Dec 1924, Covington, IN Floyd Milton MYLER
Birth:       1908
Death:       ca 1990, Danville, ILL

He also worked for the Central Illinois Railroad. Floyd died circa 1990 in a nursing home in Catlin, IL named Vermillion Manor. It is believed he is buried in Danville, but I know not where. Floyd and Marie had 5 children. Floyd had a club foot, and was quite a gambler, as the story goes.

Spouse:       Marie

Children:       Alonzo
       Floyd Jr.

1.2.4 Edward MYLER
Birth:       1863

Edward must have been born shortly after the move to Illinois from Ohio. I have no records for him or his brother, George, who was born after him. Perhaps they moved away, or died very young.
