Do the Musselwhites acknowledge the McWhites as descendants

I'm a descendant of the McWhites. I have traced them back to the Musselwhites but as far I as I could get was Jesse Musselwhite. I guessed they changed their name as they migrated from Robeson, NC to Marion, SC and then on to Greenville, SC maybe because of Scottish influence or just the Musselwhite name was just too long, I just don't know.
