Notes for MARGARET MUSGROVE:
Ann S. Grainger, 3301 Ohara Rd., Huntsville, Al 35801, writes in 1997:

MARGARET MUSGROVE's parents, WILLIAM T. MUSGROVE and NANCY TATE were on the 1830 Census, Newberry Co., S.C. and on the 1790 census in Newberry Co., SC, living next door to his mother, ARAMINTA WILLSON (widowed again via her second marriage) WILLIAM T. MUSGROVE was one of Walker Co., Ala.'s first Court Clerks. His name is on records issuing liquor
licences, etc.

In the late 1790's, WILLIAM T. MUSGROVE and family moved to Hancock Co.,
GA. He is on Tax Lists, etc. In 1801, he and his brother-in-law,
NATHAN TAIT (TATE) had been sentenced to hang in that county for
forgery. They managed to escape the jail and the Sheriff was
advertising a reward for their recapture. (His older brother, JOHN
MUSGROVE III, was in Warren & Jefferson Co., GA at the time and his
younger brother, PHILLIP MUSGROVE, was believed to be in Emanuel Co.,
GA, and they probably helped in the escape. WILLIAM T. MUSGROVE and
family fled back to South Carolina and also Cocke Co. TN (upper
northeast of Tenn) and stayed a few years. From the birthplace of his
children, only one was born in Georgia, two in Tenn and the rest in
S.C.).

In 1819, son, WILLIAM HENRY MUSGROVE, a school teacher, came to
Jefferson Co., Ala., and then moved to Blount Co., Ala., where he
married SALLEY FOWLER, daughter of well-to-do Minister and family, JOHN
FOWLER. By 1822, the rest of the family had already joined him,
including the oldest brother, JOHN TATE MUSGROVE, also a school teacher,
who had been captured in Edgefield District, S.C. in 1820.

WILLIAM T. MUSGROVE, sons EDWARD GORDON MUSGROVE and PHILLIP TRAPNELL MUSGROVE, and daughters, ELIZABETH MUSGROVE (married JOHN NORRIS) and MARGARET MUSGROVE (married LEWIS WATSON BRADLEY) moved on to Walker Co., Ala. Daughter MARY MUSGROVE had married JAMES McANALLY remained in Blount Co., with JOHN TATE MUSGROVE and WILLIAM HENRY MUSGROVE.

WILLIAM T. MUSGROVE's father, JOHN MUSGROVE (JR.) was a son of JOHN
MUSGROVE, SR., who left a will dated 1744, probated 1846, Fairfax Co.,
VA, naming all his children, and leaving each of them land, including
the daughters. The two oldest sons, EDWARD MUSGROVE and JOHN, JR. movedto the 96th District, S.C.

JOHN MUSGROVE, SR., in turn, was a son of CUTHBERT MUSGROVE, mariner
from Crooksdale, England, who became a Tobacco Farmer in Charles Co.,
MD. He was a son of WILLIAM MUSGRAVE of Crooksdale, England, where
records exist that he apprenticed his son to become a mariner. CUTHBERT
MUSGROVE's mother was named DOROTHY and so was his wife.

Since he seems to have died intestate (without a will), his son, JOHN,
SR. inherited his property and willed it to his oldest son, EDWARD, who
sold it. JOHN, JR. inherited land in Virginia and also half of wild
horses breeding stock, etc., which he took to South Carolina with him.

JOHN JR. is named in several SC histories, for his participation in the
anti-regulatory movement. Also, he had been commissioned as a Major by
the British during the Revolutionary War. His sons, JOHN III, WILLIAM
T. fought as teenagers in the 96th Brigade, a Tory Regiment. Brother
PHILLIP was much younger.

I don't know who wrote the MUSGROVE family history. It is not
completely accurate but, it seems to have come through the family line
of WILLIAM T. MUSGROVE's son, JOHN TATE MUSGROVE, via his son, The Rev. PHILLIP McCARTY's descendents. It mentions MARGARET who married LEWIS WATSON BRADLEY.

I am descended via DR. EDWARD GORDON MUSGROVE's son, LOUIS V. MUSGROVE, one of the sons who had left home, but returned in 1852. He is not shown on the 1850 census, but is on the 1860 census in Walker Co., AL.
He is also shown on the 1870 and 1880 census, but not later. LOUIS V.
married VILINDA VIOLET GANEY, a daughter of DORMAN H. GANEY and SUSAN ANDERSON of 1850 and 1860 census in Walker Co., Ala. (Two of DORMAN's sons married daughters of SOLOMON RAY of Winston Co., Ala. I don't know if related to the RHEA family or not).
